DENNETT, Robert

October 29, 1931 – Glasgow, Scotland
May 1, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Dennett, a beloved husband, cherished father and adored grandfather. Robert passed away on May 1, 2019 at the age of 87 years.

Robert was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on October 29, 1931. He was drafted to the Royal Air Force in 1955 and was stationed in England. Robert met Dorothy when he came to Calgary to visit his sister Mary in the Spring of 1957. It was love at first sight. They were married in December of the same year in Glasgow, Scotland. Derek and Gary were born in Scotland and in 1966, the family moved to Calgary, Alberta to start a new life. Allan and Susan were added to the beautiful growing family shortly after the relocation.

Robert will be remembered most for his hard work, outgoing personality and his sense of humor. He has accomplished much through his life. Robert has worked as a skillful millwright in the industrial sector. He was an expert craftsman and has created many exceptional pieces throughout his life. Robert was also an outstanding swim coach with the Thornhill Swim Club for sixteen years. He took great pleasure in helping and supporting others.

Robert and Dorothy have enjoyed spending time together at their Sylvan Lake vacation spot for over twenty five years. They spent much of their time golfing, relaxing and visiting with family and friends. Their best friends Marg and Alvin also own a lot in the same Sylvan Lake resort. The four rascals were inseparable and have created many great memories through the years. Robert was particularly proud of his seven grand-children. Many of the unforgettable moments were time spent with them at the lake. The fond memories for the kids included movie nights, mini-golf, golfing, swimming which involved the game “find the hidden golf balls” in the pool. Each visit to the lake included a trip to Moo-Cow for ice cream, just one of the grandkids’ favorite activities with Babba and Grandpa.

Robert had a passion for golf, music, books and travel. He spent many wonderful vacations with his love, Dorothy. One of the most memorable vacations was in 2010, when they travelled to visit their ancestral origins by taking the Norway Cruise, then onto a visit to Glasgow after 40 years living in Canada. Inspired by Robert’s historical reading of Captain Cook, he travelled with Dorothy to Tahiti and the south seas, they also have visited relatives in Australia.

In 2016, Robert and Dorothy moved into a condo complex where they have enjoyed life together. They have met many wonderful friends through the endless activities that are offered in the complex. Robert particularly enjoyed the music nights and bowling sessions. The Dennett family is forever grateful for the wonderful support from the condo community.

Robert is survived by Dorothy, the love of his life for the past 61 years; his four children, Derek (Lena), Gary, Allan (Susan), Susan (Jack); seven grandchildren, Caitlin, Roland, Jacob, Brooke, Caleb, Liam and Jalen; sister Marion (Ian). He was predeceased by his parents and three sisters.

Dad, thank you for your love, guidance and support through the years. We miss you dearly.

A “Celebration of life” will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB), Friday, May 10, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through https://www.mhfh.com/dennett-robert/.

Dorothy and the entire Dennett family,

John and I are very saddened to hear of Bob’s passing. He was a devoted family man who made a difference in so many people’s lives, not just in swimming but also as a friend in every day life. We are so thankful to him and Dorothy for standing up as witnesses to our wedding in Hawaii, some 36 yrs ago. Bob left us with so many cherished memories, his beautiful smile and sense of humour. Bob was loved and loved others, truly the best legacy a person can leave on this earth.

    Your friends,
    John and Dolorese

  20. Aloha Mrs. Dennett (Dorothy), Gary, Derek, Allan, and Susan,
I am so deeply saddened to hear of the passing of “Mr. Dennett”, as your husband and father was such a powerful presence and shaper of my life. Other people can call him Bob or Robert, but to me I have always expressed my respect to Mr. and Mrs. Dennett – even as I grew into an adult.
Mr. Dennett was my swim coach at first, but grew into a mentor and a life long friend. In Hawai`i I would call him a “Kumu”, a life long teacher, passing along knowledge, skill, humour, and many life lessons too numerous to put to paper.
Mr. Dennett (Robert), Dorothy and the Dennett family will always remain a part of my life.
Thank you so very much and take care of each other.
    Mahalo Nui Loa. Robert Pytlarz.

  22. Dear Aunt Dorothy and family,

We were very sorry to hear of Uncle Robert’s passing.
These words, by a fellow Scot (also named Robert), seem most apt:

The friend of man, the friend of truth,
The friend of age, and guide of youth:
Few hearts like his, with virtue warmed,
Few heads with knowledge so informed:
    If there’s another world, he lives in bliss;
If there is none, he made the best of this.

With so much love and tenderness I wish to leave condolences to Dorothy and family for Robert’s passing. My favorite memory of Robert is when I pretended I’d pierced my nose with a fake ring. His reaction was so real and so hilarious. I loved how he didn’t mince a word and showed pure unbridled relief when I took it off. I hope to live my life as well as he did. Doing what I love to do and loving hard on my own family.

    To Dorothy and family,

It was with great sadness we received the news of Robert’s passing. I still recall, with fond memories, the evening that Dad and I spent with you and Robert, when we visited Calgary. Robert told you to make steak pie, and I remember it was so good, Dad and I had second helpings! Robert and Dad reminisced about Scotland, people they knew, and of family. I will always remember how you both made us so very welcome in your home.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you always, and to Marion, also. Another truly beautiful Scotsman has left this world.

  36. It was sorrowful to learn of Mr. Dennett’s sudden passing. I had only met him on a couple of occasions: once at his son, Derek’s wedding reception, when Derek married Lena, we had a brief but spirited discussion about modern art. Any father that raises a son as fine as my dear friend Derek is a figure that will missed and warmly remembered.
