DEMERS, Sylvia Laura

July 7, 1926 – Saskatchewan
March 11, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Sylvia passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 11th, 2018 at the age of 91 years.

Sylvia was a quiet, unassuming, gracious lady, who extolled the virtues of kindness, thoughtfulness, compassion, tolerance, honesty and loyalty, to all who had the blessing of knowing her and calling her a friend.

She served for a period of time in the military and thereafter spent the majority of her working career in administration in the oil and gas industry. Sylvia became a member of the Baha’i Faith in 1955 and served the Faith in many capacities.

She loved animals of all kinds and often welcomed strays into her home. Knitting was a favourite past-time as she didn’t like to waste a minute and if she had to sit she felt by knitting a scarf, socks or sweater for someone in need, she wasn’t wasting time. One of her greatest joys was teaching English to newcomers to Canada and watching them thrive as they settled in to their new home.

She is survived by her cousins, Marcy Cohen of Vancouver, Joe Cohen of the U.S.A, and Miya Learman of Israel.

Sylvia was predeceased by her beloved mother, Dora Plotkin and her two brothers, Harvey Plotkin and David Plotkin.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB) on Thursday, March 15, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. Reception to follow at the Funeral Home. Condolences may be forwarded through

Condolence Messages

  1. Sylvia’s heart was filled with compassion and she was generous beyond measure. However, she was also fearless in many ways and had a strong sense of justice. She was my Sunday school teacher and ESL teacher at the same time, when we moved to Canada in the early 80s, and she became a great role model and grandmother-like figure that I learned many life lessons from.
Our family is deeply saddened by her passing, but we also share the joy of her being reunited with the Great Creator, whom she served tirelessly throughout her life.

“O Thou Kind Lord! This dearly cherished maidservant was attracted to Thee, and through reflection and discernment longed to attain Thy presence and enter Thy realms. With tearful eyes she fixed her gaze on the Kingdom of Mysteries. Many a night she spent in deep communion with Thee, and many a day she lived in intimate remembrance of Thee. At every morn she was mindful of Thee, and at every eve she centered her thoughts upon Thee. Like unto a singing nightingale she chanted Thy sacred verses, and like unto a mirror she sought to reflect Thy light.

O Thou Forgiver of sins! Open Thou the way for this awakened soul to enter Thy Kingdom, and enable this bird, trained by Thy hand, to soar in the eternal rose garden. She is afire with longing to draw nigh unto Thee; enable her to attain Thy presence. She is distraught and distressed in separation from Thee; cause her to be admitted into Thy Heavenly Mansion.

O Lord! We are sinners, but Thou art the Forgiver. We are submerged in the ocean of shortcomings, but Thou art the Pardoner; the Kind. Forgive our sins and bless us with Thine abundant grace. Grant us the privilege of beholding Thy Countenance, and give us the chalice of joy and bliss. We are captives of our own transgressions, and Thou art the King of bountiful favors. We are drowned in a sea of iniquities, and Thou art the Lord of infinite mercy. Thou art the Giver, the Glorious, the Eternal, the Bounteous; and Thou art the All-Gracious, the All-Merciful, the Omnipotent, He Who is the Bestower of gifts and the Forgiver of sins. Verily, Thou art He to Whom we turn for the remission of our failings, He Who is the Lord of Hosts.

  2. I am so saddened to hear of Sylvia’s passing. Sylvia tutored me for several years from elementary through early high school. I attribute a lot of my English skills to her and I really enjoyed it when she taught me about virtues. Some of my favourite memories of Sylvia are when she would gift school supplies to me for Christmas – colourful reinforcements, markers, pens and scissors with fancy edges. They were my favourites!

Rest easy, Sylvia. Know you are missed and you made a difference in so many lives.

  3. I was so saddened to hear about Sylvia’s passing.

I met Sylvia for the first time when I was nine years old. She came to my house twice a week, every week up until I finished high school. She was quiet, kind, and endlessly patient. She nurtured my love for reading and inspired a deep appreciation for writing stories. She inspired such a deep love, that I went and majored in English Literature. Of all the teachers that I have had, I have been most fortunate to have been taught by Sylvia. Her influence will be with me for the rest of my life.

My thoughts are with Sylvia and her family and loved ones.
