DEGREEVE, Alexander

March 27, 1935 – Calgary Alberta
January 25, 2018 – Calgary Alberta

Alex passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family at the age of 82 after a two year battle with MDS. He will be deeply missed.

He attended the University of Oklahoma, graduating with a B.SC in Geological Engineering in 1955. He worked for thirty-five years with Mobil Oil Canada and later as an independent consultant. Alex often reflected on his early years saying, “I lived in one of the best times”, free to roam the open prairie on his horse and being a part of the ‘heyday’ of the oil and gas industry. His paradise was being at his cabin on Lake Windermere, BC. Taking care of his health was a priority, working out regularly at the YMCA and later at the Calgary Winter Club. He was also a member of the Silver Springs Golf and Country Club. Being with his family was his greatest joy; he was a gifted story teller and made a connection with each person that entered his life, often leaving a lasting impact. He was strong in his Catholic faith.

Alex is survived by his wife Shirley (nee Sandum); daughter and son-in-law Jolie and Jay Hirtle; son Jason; grandchildren Jaxon, Ava and Luke Hirtle, and Claire DeGreeve; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Marie and Wayne Hicks and Johanna and Jim McCool; two brothers and sisters-in-law Theo and Sharon DeGreeve and Bernie and Wendy DeGreeve; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at the Peter Lougheed Hematology Clinic for their care during his time there.

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY Crowfoot (82 Crowfoot Circle N.W., Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at 7:00 pm.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Luke’s Catholic Church (Corner of Northmount Drive & Northland Drive N.W., Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at 11:00 am, reception to follow. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

  13. Shirley, Jolie and Jay –
I really, really enjoyed talking with Alex and listening to his stories over the years. I will be forever grateful to him (and Shirley and Jay) for inviting me to stay in your house (and feed me) for the final month of my last year of university to help me graduate. Not sure if I would have actually graduated and gone on to be an engineer in oil and gas without you. He will definitely be missed, but not forgotten.

  14. I met Alex through the Advisory Board of Target Energy and am sad to learn of his passing. He brought a keen intellect and a wealth of experience to our meetings with a sprinkling of dry humour. RIP Alex.

My sincere condolences with the passing away of Alex. We were coworkers at Mobil and I enjoyed the many chats with Alex. He was a great guy with a special gift to bring the best out of people. Coincidentally I was diagnosed a month ago with a similar rare blood disease called Myaloma. Wish the family strength in these difficult days He was strong in his faith giving comfort he is in a better place.

Deepest sympathies for the family. Lots of great memories of him at the cabin. He was an encouraging and optimistic man who always found the time to give you his attention. He taught me to waterski! And that same boat taught my kids to waterski too. He will be missed. What a joy to have known him.
