DEGERNESS, Lina Maria (Fabris)

Posted By Obits On September 17, 2012 @ 4:28 PM In Obituary | 14 Comments

June 8, 1934 – September 17, 2012

Born June 8, 1934, Powell River, B.C., passed away Monday, September 17, 2012, Calgary, Alberta

Predeceased by Ken Degerness (ex-husband). Survived by son Terry Degerness, his wife Tara and their children Jackson and Abigail, as well as daughter Joann Williams and her husband Simon.

Lina was raised in Trail, B.C. and moved to Calgary in 1962, where she worked at CFCN Radio and met her husband Ken. They had two children of whom they were exceptionally proud, and although the marriage ended, their friendship never did. Though Lina had no siblings, her children knew many aunts and uncles, special connections forged of love and trust, spanning generations. Nona Lina took special pleasure in her grandchildren and reveled in watching them grow. Calgary was Lina’s home, but Trail forever remained a special place, she loved the people, the spirit and the community and enjoyed many trips back to visit family and friends.

Most of Lina’s career was spent at Bishop Carroll High School where she worked in administration and spent countless hours supporting dramatic productions and touching the lives of the many students she cared deeply about. From involvement with the Olympic Mascot program to chaperoning overseas trips, she enthusiastically volunteered and embraced new opportunities.

In latter years, visits to the Tom Baker Cancer Centre became far too frequent, though Lina’s strength and courage in the face of her illness remained inspirational. She forged strong relationships with those she encountered there and had a profound appreciation for all the staff, especially Dr. A. Patterson and Nurse Deborah Reinheimer. The family would also like to thank her Physician Dr R. Dargie.

The family would like to acknowledge Rosedale Hospice, where she spent her final days enjoying comfort, compassion and chocolate ice cream.

A Funeral Mass will be Celebrated at St. James Catholic Church, 5504 – 20 Street S.W. on Friday, September 21, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Dear Terry and Joann,

I wanted to express my condolences in the loss of your dear mother, Lina. Lina and I left Trail together in 1962 to travel to Calgary to live together and find work. Your mum met and married your dad and I returned to Trail to marry my husband.
I haven’t seen Lina for several years, but she was always a thoughtful, caring person who I know will be missed by all of you.

Keep the memories close and she will live on forever in your hearts.

Sincerely, Darlene Soligo, Trail, BC

Lina’s loss will impact many people. She was well regarded in every circle she found herself involved in. We have never seen a more courageous or positive battle with cancer than that waged by your mother. We have already said she was the youngest old lady we knew but she was also the coolest, the bravest, the most sincere, honest and dignified woman we have had the pleasure to call friend. And could she cook! She will be sorely missed.

Condolence from Diane Wells on September 26th, 2012 12:30 PM

To the Degerness Family,

Please accept our most heartfelt sympathy on the loss of such a special lady!!

We first met Lina and Ken many, many years ago when we lived on 50th Ave SW.

I most recently connected with her again while working at the Cancer Centre, although I was soo happy to see her and hear all the stories of the kids and grandkids, it made me sad that she was there.

She always had a smile on her face and I loved visiting with her!!

May all the memories you have comfort you through the difficult days.
