DeGAGNÉ, Denise Lillian (née Lauzé)

April 19, 1927 – St Jean Baptiste, Manitoba

February 8, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Mother, Sister, Aunt, Grandmother and Great-grandmother who passed away in Calgary in the early morning on Friday, February 8, 2019, surrounded by her loving family.

Mom was born on the family farm in St. Jean Baptiste, Manitoba on April 19, 1927.

After completing her schooling she went on a northern adventure to St. Theresa Point (Island Lake) with her sister, Martha, to teach English to local First-Nation children.  In turn, having accepted her into their community, they taught Mom Cree words and expressions, and shared with her their indigenous culture.  She loved telling us stories about the incredible experiences that had such a huge impact on her life. She returned for a visit many years later, and was treated like a long-lost relative, which warmed her heart and solidified her love for the people she knew so long ago.

Mom, Dad and our sister, Mona, later moved from Manitoba to Medicine Hat to set down new roots.  Mom and Dad soon added Maurice, Michelle, René and Réanne to the family.  Both Mom and Dad came from very large families, so they loved to entertain and were always delighted to receive company of family and friends from near and far.

After raising their children, Mom decided to pursue her life-long dream of becoming a French teacher.  In her early fifties she enrolled at the Medicine Hat College and then obtained her Education Degree from the University of Calgary, and soon began her new career as a French teacher.  Years later, upon her retirement, some of the highlights of her life included volunteering at the 1988 Winter Olympics, and spending quality time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom she absolutely adored.

Mom is survived by her four children, Maurice (Melanie), Michelle, René (Karen), and Réanne.  She is also survived by eight adoring grandchildren Geoffrey Heller and Mason Heller, Claire (Dominic) Leupold, Marie (Troy) Allchurch, Phil DeGagné (Clay), Jeanne (Landon) Franson, Danna DeGagné and Emma DeGagné; and six adoring great-grandchildren Evander and Jocelyn Leupold, Ava, Jayna and Reid Allchurch and Harper Franson. She was predeceased by her husband, Eugene DeGagné, and her eldest daughter, Mona Heller (nee DeGagné).

Mom is also survived by her loving siblings Paul (Linda) Lauzé, and Rollande (Tom) Lauzé-Duffy; sisters-in-law Doris Lauzé, and Gail Lauzé; son-in-law, Brian Heller.  She was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Anna Lauzé; nineteen brothers and sisters, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Collectively, the memories we have are etched into our hearts forever.  Her legacy will live on with the memories we all hold dear and share.  ♥ We love you and will always miss you ♥

Cremation has taken place and a Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Spirit Catholic Church (10827 – 24th Street S.W., Calgary, AB) on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. To view the full obituary or express your condolences, please visit www.mcinnisandholloway.com. The family would like to sincerely thank the staff of the Southwood Care Centre for their loving care.

In living memory of Denise DeGagné, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

My mother loved and respected Denise very much. They became good friends when they lived in the same building in Calgary. She was helpful and kind and such a good cook. She made the best crapes in the world.

To all Mrs DeGagne’s children… It saddens us to know you have had to watch sometimes helpless as your Mom slipped away. We know all to well the feeling of “not more we can do”. It is in in recognizing this that we vow to help each other and our children have an easier time when we are closing our lives. Be kind to each other. Be grateful for all lessons learned. Your Mom inspired some terrific children… you guys.

My condolences to the DeGagne family.
Many years ago I was teaching in the same school in Airdrie with Denise. I remember her as a soft-spoken, genuinely kind and caring teacher. She was generous with compliments and always seemed to carry an infectious sense of optimism.
    What a gift!
