DE NEVE, Proba Louisa

May 19, 1928 – Lyalta, Alberta
November 27, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Proba Louisa De Neve of Calgary passed away on Tuesday, November 27, 2018 at the age of 90 years.

Proba was born in Lyalta, AB on May 19, 1928. She graduated from St. Mary’s Girl’s School in Calgary and received her teaching certificate from U of A (Calgary Branch), while boarding at Sacred Heart Convent with the Sisters, Faithful Companions of Jesus. During a family holiday in Belgium in 1947-1948, Proba met Andre and they were married in 1952 after Andre had come to Calgary (1951). Proba began teaching in 1948. The first four happy teaching years were at Crowfoot Indian Residential School on the Blackfoot (Siksika) Reserve in Cluny. The Indigenous people were forever remembered and respected by her. She sustained many close relationships. During the remaining thirty-one years she taught and was an Assistant Principal for twenty-one years in Forest Lawn and the last years prior to retirement in Calgary. Teaching was a rewarding profession that she always loved. Proba and Andre enjoyed traveling, especially to visit relatives and friends in Belgium. At home in Alberta they found pleasure in camping, cycling, bowling and pitching horseshoes. They were proud to introduce visitors from Belgium to the beautiful province of Alberta, prairies, mountains and the city of Calgary.

She will be lovingly remembered by her nieces and nephews, Clarence De Neve, Rita (Randy) Poluck, Anita Cockerill, Denise De Neve, and Cyriel (Colleen) De Neve; by six grandnieces and grandnephews, Diana Zytko, Philip (Fatima) Schaber, Kathy Yourth (Kurt Schappaert), Amanda (Mickey) Hays, Ayden De Neve and Nikolas De Neve; by six great-nieces and great-nephews, Alex and Christopher Zytko, Alyssa (Jon) Furtado, Tyler Schaber, Jakob Yourth and Zoe Schappert; by two great, great-nieces Mia and Aribella Furtado. Proba is also survived by numerous relatives in Belgium. She was predeceased by her parents, Clara and Cyriel De Neve; her husband Andre De Neve and her sister Anna De Neve.

  7. Chuck and Arline Crockford :

    Dear members of Proba’s family,
Chuck and I would like to extend our condolences to all the members of Proba’s family, and particularly to her nieces, nephews, and their families whom she cared for as though they were her own. She celebrated their successes, and worried about their problems. She was there for them in time of need, and “Her Family”, in turn, was there for her when she required help.
Proba was an outstanding educator and administrator. I was very fortunate to have been placed at a school in which she was the assistant principal. Proba’s cheery smile, sense of humour and common sense approach made working with her a delightful experience. She had a wonderful manner with children, and issues were resolved with understanding and compassion. Former students became her friends, and until recent years Proba would visit the stampede to talk to former Indigenous students at the reconstructed native village on the stampede grounds.
Proba was a true and valued friend. Although we have lived in Ontario for more than forty years, distance did not affect our friendship, in spite of the fact advancing years saw emails and phone calls replacing our occasional visits and letters.
Proba lived a full and productive life. As a result there is no doubt that while she will be missed by many, she will be forgotten by none. Rest in peace, dear friend, rest in peace.
    With love,
Chuck and Arline Crockford, Waterloo, Ontario
