DAWSON, John Frederick

July 27, 1932 – Moose Jaw, SK
January 14, 2016 – Calgary, AB

John was born in Moose Jaw, SK in 1932 and grew up just south of there on a farm near Baildon. He met Wilma Munford at Temple Gardens in Moose Jaw in 1952 and they were married on Dec 11, 1954 at St. Andrews United Church. They moved into the house that he and his brother Geoff were in the middle of building, a house which still stands today at 64 Grandview St. in Moose Jaw. John worked for Chrysler Corporation as a partsman and continued in the same role for Freeman & Wilson after moving to Calgary in 1959.

In 1962 John, and his good friend Cec Day, opened the White Rose Service Station (Canadian Oil) on the corner of McLeod Trail and 94th Ave SW. However, John was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1965 and had to give up his role in the Service Station. He became a licensed Real Estate Agent and worked in that field for more than 25 years.

John continued his life in not the best of health, however he never complained about the hand he was dealt. He and Wilma enjoyed many years camping in their trailer and then motor home with family and friends. Also they were active members of the Queens & Jacks Square Dancing club for many years, which included dancing in the Opening Ceremonies at the 1988 Winter Olympics.
John went into an extended care home in 2014 where he remained until he passed away peacefully on January 14, 2016.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years Wilma, his three children Steve (Veronica), Ken (Judi), Cindy (Erwine); his 5 grandchildren Chad (Jen), Tiana (Tyler), Chris (Elisha), Michelle (Andrew), Trevor (Camille); his three great-grandchildren Cody, Cam, Sadie and his brother Geoff (Shirley) along with numerous extended family. He was pre-deceased by his sister Lillian and daughter-in-law Susan.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Saturday, January 23, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of John Dawson, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.
