October 17, 1985 – Calgary, Alberta
July 11, 2019 – Edmonton, Alberta

Lee Dawes of Edmonton, AB, passed away on Thursday, July 11, 2019 at the age of 33 years.

Robert Samuel Lee Dawes entered our world and we quickly came to realize this infant was certainly his own person! He lived his life fully and he was able to accomplish many things in his short time here on earth. Lee was very involved in the marching bands of Calgary, Round-Up Band, Stetson Show Band, the Calgary Stampede Showband, and lastly, A Band of Outriders, where he served on the committee executive. He absolutely loved performing; he did so with heart and soul, especially during the ten days of the Calgary Stampede, and his numerous trips with the bands over the years. He took pride in whatever he did, including selling real estate, going to school, and working as an engineer for Schlumberger. Lee was personable, friendly and witty. He enjoyed his band friends; they were truly his people.

Lee will be lovingly remembered by his brother Cam; dad Ron; mom Tam; Grandpa and Grandma Seibel; Auntie Heather and Unc Craig; special cousins Patrick, Kimberly and her partner Josh; and very dear friends Amy and Geoff. We know as well, he will be missed by his many friends. Lee was predeceased by his Grandma Mavis.

A Celebration of Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB [1]), on Saturday, July 20, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.

If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, we have set up The Lee Dawes Memorial Fund through the Calgary Stampede Foundation, https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/m/4426/donation [2] (Choose The Lee Dawes Memorial Fund in the Fund drop-down menu) or you may choose to donate to the charity of your choice. Condolences may be forwarded through www.McInnisandHolloway.com.

In living memory of Lee Dawes, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, CALGARY, AB, T2E 2V6, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

Condolence from Peter Warne on July 17th, 2019 1:15 PM

This is not an obituary that I was expecting to read. May balm and benison descend upon all members of Lee’s family in the fullness of time. An inexplicable loss for which I grieve.

Condolence from Jenna Whitten on July 17th, 2019 1:50 PM

With a very heavy heart I read this memorial. Lee was such an amazing man. I had the absolute pleasure preforming beside him on the Saddledome Steps numerous times and even marched the Pasadena parade with him in my section. We may have not been close but he was part of the Trumpet family and he was such a bright light. I don’t have a single negative memory of him, just always making us laugh at every turn. Nothing anyone says can make him come back, but know so many people loved him! I am so sorry for your loss and please know how many of us are hurting from this news. The BOC community will want to do everything we can to help, never be afraid to reach out.

Condolence from Angela Zack on July 17th, 2019 1:54 PM

Condolence from Michelle Fior on July 17th, 2019 10:27 PM

I had the absolute pleasure of being an instructor at Stetsons when Lee was there – what an energetic young man and entertaining performer he was! I also had the great opportunity to work with Lee on the Outrider executive – specifically when we planned the 25th-anniversary celebration of the Band of Outriders. The image we used for the celebration was one of my favorites of Lee! I will always remember Lee for the fun, honest and genuine person that I got to know. My thoughts and prayers are with all of his family and close friends during this very difficult time.

Condolence from Debbie Teel on July 18th, 2019 10:44 AM

Whilst I didn’t know Lee as a close friend, I knew him as one of the family within the bands. He always made a point of coming and chatting to me. His presence as a performer & a person is clear, and will stay in our memory. This is such a huge loss, and I am so sorry for this. Our thoughts are with all his family at this time. Condolence from Cheryl Rowley on July 18th, 2019 1:13 PM

Please accept my most sincere condolences on the loss of your treasured son, Lee.
His time on Earth was much too short; he was well-loved and will be missed forever by his loving family. Please take some small comfort in knowing that many of us are thinking of you at this very sad and difficult time.

Condolence from Jordan Ganchev on July 18th, 2019 1:21 PM

I first met Lee back in the fall of 1998 when he joined the Round-Up Band and we travelled to Australia to compete in the WAMSB competition in Sidney. Over the years we were either in a band together or at most a year apart, but regardless was always a familiar face and very much full of energy. I have fond memories of his presence in the Showband’s trumpet section (who playfully harassed the euphonium section) and his dedication and loyalty to the Outriders organization when I worked on staff with Showband. The famed Trumpet-Euph parties of the early 2000’s Showband would always see him in attendance bringing his upbeat personality and quick wit. That section of players were a hilarious bunch of jokers and Lee was absolutely cut from that cloth. Of course one cannot forget his love of cars and passion for motorsports either, something I’ll remember about him as well. To hear of his passing is truly heartbreaking and to his family and close friends I extended my deepest condolences and affection during this very difficult time.

Condolence from Alastair Pollock on July 18th, 2019 1:39 PM

I’m very sorry to hear of Lee’s passing, and I offer my deepest condolences to your family.

I joined the Stampede Showband without prior experience with the Bands of Calgary, and Lee was one of the earliest and most outgoing personalities to welcome me as a member. I counted Lee as a mentor and friend during my time with the band, and his fun, gregarious and driven nature was inspiring during a formative period of my life.

I appreciate Lee greatly for who he was, and the impact he had on countless people like myself. He will be very missed.

Condolence from Jan & Bob Richardson on July 18th, 2019 6:50 PM

We extend our sympathies to the Seibel family. This final chapter of Lee’s life came too soon… setting off a ripple of sadness. We’re so sorry. Yet, as you gather, we’re sure you’re opening back up the story of his life and finding all the memories/experiences that death and time cannot touch or take away. Hold fast to that richness. Take good care of each other.
You’re held in prayer at this tough and tender time.
God bless your dear hearts.

I am so very deeply sorry for your loss.
I had the pleasure of working with Lee for a little while and it was certainly not unknown how great of a guy he was. Always happy, laughing, and joking here at work and I am so thankful to have known him for the time I did. His memory will forever live on, and I wish all of his family, friends, and everybody who knew Lee, strength to get through this difficult time.
Keeping everyone in my thoughts and prayers.

Condolence from Michele Geisler on July 19th, 2019 1:33 PM

After the tears have dried and the goodbyes have been said, all we have to hold onto are the happy memories that we’ve shared with our loved ones who have passed, this is what keeps them alive in our hearts and in our minds, and they will continue to live on, through us.
My heartfelt condolences to Craig, Tammie and family. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Condolence from Jay Michalak on July 19th, 2019 11:56 PM

Tammy and family, I was so sorry to hear of Lee’s passing. I had the absolute pleasure of being his instructor and band director for 14 years – he was always a joy to be around. He was such an important part of the spirit of Outriders and will always have a place in our group’s history and memory. I wrote a short dedication to his memory:

To my friend Lee Dawes –
You were always there, with a ready smile, and a sense of humour.
You were always there to listen to your friends and help them feel like they were ok and that they belonged.
You were always there to play your heart out.
You were always there to bring smiles to the crowd.
Most of all you were always there just to talk and be a friend.
It’s hard to imagine that now we can only remember. Every note you ever played, was love. Every shenanigan was joy. Every smile a gift. The world is a better place because you were with us. We will always remember. Rest easy my friend.

Condolence from Judy Walker on July 20th, 2019 7:18 AM

Tami and Family, It is with the utmost sadness that we heard about your loss of Lee. I have often remembered with a smile how, when I volunteered on a field trip with Maren and Lee’s class, I ‘lost’ Lee when he hid behind a door. I had to admit to the teacher that I had misplaced him. He thought it was a great joke. Maren too, remembers him with fondness. May you find strength and peace in knowing that Lee touched many lives with his passions and enthusiasms and that you and your family are sent much love.

Condolence from Morgan Barker on July 20th, 2019 11:37 PM

I sent my thoughts and prayers to his family and his friends. Lee was stand up man who got me through our schooling together. I knew Lee for only 5 years but I considered him a great friend. We shared so many great times together and to hear of his passing Is truly devastating. He was always willing to lend a hand or an ear whenever and taught me more life lessons then I can count, for this I am truly grateful. I will miss catching up over a pint.
Rest easy buddy.

Condolence from Turgay Ogut and family on July 21st, 2019 1:52 PM
