DAMKAR, Iris Wendeline (nee Olson)

December 17, 1937 – Armena, Alberta
August 3, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Iris, beloved wife of Ernie Damkar of Calgary, peacefully passed away on August 3, 2018 at the age of 80 years.

Iris (nee Olson) was born December 17, 1937, the second daughter of four girls and one boy to Julius and Iva Olson, at home in Armena, Alberta. She was baptized, and through confirmation, affirmed her decision to follow Jesus through all her life. She grew up on a small farm with a two-room house that had no electricity or running water; she and her sisters were the water brigade from the windmill to the house. She attended Grade 11 and 12 at Camrose Lutheran College (CLC), graduating in 1956. She then studied at The Canadian Lutheran Bible Institute (CLBI) for two years, graduating in 1958. In the fall of 1959 she returned to CLC and enrolled in the Commercial Course (Secretaries Course) and graduated in June 1960 with Honours. She moved to Calgary to work for a finance company and was later employed in accounting at the Foothills Book Store.

While at CLBI, she met Ernie, marrying him August 5, 1961. They settled on a dairy farm on the shores of Bearspaw Dam, West of Calgary. Iris continued her accounting career as Ernie farmed with his brother Norman and father Abel Damkar. In 1970, Iris, Ernie and Norman purchased the farm from Ernie’s parents and she became a full-time farmer.

Through these years Iris worked tirelessly at the dairy, from milking, feeding calves, tractor work, accounting and record keepings, and a hostess to all the hired help. Iris was an excellent cook serving meals daily to all the dairy hands, who were often international exchange students that lived in their home. Because of her warm hospitality, everyone loved to drop in for a coffee that was always served with fresh baking. Despite her numerous demands on the farm and in the house, she still found time to plant and tend a garden and made time for knitting, crocheting, and needlepoint. For many years, Ernie and Iris faithfully served at Hope Lutheran Church. In their later years, they worshipped at Centre Street Church.

Weary from health issues, Iris peacefully passed away on Friday, August 3, with Ernie by her side.

Iris is survived by her faithful husband Ernie, two sisters Treva (d.Warren) Felzien and Letha (Don) Saltvold; three brother’s-in-law Bent (d.Eleanor) Damkar, Norman (Esther) Damkar, Ken (d.Ruth) Koskinen; and many nieces and nephews who are very fond of her.

Iris was predeceased by her parents, Julius and Iva Olson; her oldest sister Jeannette, her brother Afton, and his daughter Heather.

Funeral Services will be held at Centre Street Church “Central Campus” (3900 – 2nd Street N.E., Calgary, AB) on Monday, August 13, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the church. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to Samaritan’s Purse – Canada, 20 Hopewell Way N.E., Calgary, AB T3J 5H5 Telephone 1 (800) 663-6500 www.samaritanspurse.ca.

  15. Gordon Atkins :

    Ernie,

JoAnne and I send our sincere condolences on the passing of Iris. We have so many rich memories of the relationships we shared with your family both through the Holstein herd and providing veterinary care. Iris was an amazing lady – always so welcoming, cheerful, hard working and amazingly organized. I always looked forward to my visit to the farm knowing that, beyond the veterinary care, Iris would always have some fresh baking ready and always had time to find out how our family was doing. She was a special role model for us all.

    All our Thoughts and Prayers,

    Gordon and JoAnne Atkins
