CUNNINGHAM, Linda May

Posted By Obits On May 6, 2019 @ 1:27 PM In Chapel Of The Bells Obituaries,Obituary | 3 Comments

November 1, 1955 – April 26, 2019

Linda May Cunningham died peacefully at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre on April 26, 2019, after a two-year encounter with cancer. An only child, she was born in Winnipeg on November 1, 1955, to Jack Cunningham and Edna May Barratt. Her surviving relatives are Bobbie and Kathy of White Rock BC; Gary and Grace of Shawinigan Lake BC; and Chad, Lacey and Brooke of Oakbank MB.

Her journey took her through Calgary several times but also to Ottawa, Vancouver, New York City (where she completed a Certificate in Interior Design at Parsons School of Design), to Washington D.C. (where she attended her first Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival), and back to Calgary, where she completed her Master’s of Environmental Design at the University of Calgary.

She was equally at home in a board meeting or the broadcast booth at CJSW community radio at the University of Calgary, in the judge’s chair at wool fleece or craft beer competitions, or photographing flamingos on a remote Bahamian island. A deep volunteer history included the XV Olympic Games in Calgary and annual participation at the Stampede. Her focus on fibre and book art won her grants, awards, and multiple exhibitions across Canada. Knowledge and appreciation of fine food, good wine, Scotch, music, fine arts, history, literature, politics, bike racing, tennis, and just about every other interesting human endeavour, made her a terrific dinner companion, especially to Dennis Brooks, the one who she called her soul mate, who died suddenly in March of 2011.

Join us in a celebration of Linda’s life by remaining creative to the end, by raising a glass of something special to you, by knitting, or by cheering on your favourite hockey team, preferably Les Canadiens. Linda’s recent interests suggest that those who wish to donate in her honour might consider choosing One Yellow Rabbit Theatre Association or the Equinox Vigil. A memorial tree will be planted in her honour in Fish Creek Provincial Park. Instead of a formal service, friends and family will be invited to attend a memorial celebration once the plans have been put in place.

Condolences for the family of “CUNNINGHAM, Linda May”

Condolence from Samuel George on May 9th, 2019 12:55 PM

Linda made me feel very welcome in my short couple of years in Calgary. It was a pleasure to have known her. Wish we could have had her over to see Birmingham, UK but it wasn’t to be in the end. Our love to all.

I met Linda at our musical improvisation camp in the Gaspésie. I loved her wide interest and willingness to talk about anything. “Anything” included her honesty in her experiences with cancer. That and her clever, funny and/or often biting, views on life made her a wonderful companion. She is missed.

Condolence from Eleanor Thomas on June 2nd, 2019 1:20 PM

I met Linda online, and we managed to get together once. It was in Smiths Falls, Ontario, while I was on a two-week paddle trip on the Rideau Waterway and she was travelling south after seeing friends in Ottawa. We had lunch at Noal Pantry, and planned to do so again this summer as I paddled past. Sadly, it was not to be. I will miss Linda’s clever and artistic posts on Facebook, but mostly I will miss just knowing that she’s there somewhere, doing something creative. Good-bye, Linda. It was a pleasure knowing you.
