CUNNINGHAM, Don

December 3, 1965 – July 28, 2019

Don Cunningham, beloved husband of Tanya, proud father of Kyle and Justin, and dog dad to Grizzy; suddenly passed away on Sunday, July 28, 2019 at the age of 53.

Don will be lovingly remembered by his mother Joyce; brother Stewart; niece Jennifer (Matthew); his large extended family, and many lifelong friends. He is predeceased by his father, John; his sister, Audrey; and his favourite dog, Moose.

Don was a dedicated, loving husband to Tanya, always encouraging and supportive. He was an ideal, enthusiastic father to their sons, always willing to teach, guide, and demonstrate integrity, right and wrong, and respect. Don was a loyal son, and like a second father to his niece after her mother passed away. To those he was closest, Don was their sounding board and backbone. During times of heartache, loss, tragedy, or strife, he was dependable with a helping hand or some sage and balanced advice. His ability to articulate his knowledge and thoughts so eloquently and effectively made his advice a valuable addition to all who had the luxury of receiving it. He was honest and trustworthy; the most loyal friend a person could ask for. Don lit up every room he entered with his optimism and cheerfulness. He brightened every situation he was a part of, and made every conversation interesting. Don made every friend feel like they were his best friend. He was never afraid to, “tell it like it is,” challenge the status quo and stated his positions unapologetically. He had a knack for knowing what was required under any given situation and was fearless and unwavering in his commitment once direction was determined. Beginning his 27 year career as a chemical engineer, Don ultimately advanced to be a highly respected, principled leader in numerous roles as Project Manager for many large-scale oil & gas projects both domestic and international. Don was an enduring leader and a critical thinker to all his colleagues. Don masterfully struck the perfect balance between work and home life and loved to spend days and nights barbecuing with his loving family and entertaining friends and colleagues. In addition to family, his love of hockey, football, golf, travel, and music also filled his spare time. Loved by all in his circle Don will be immeasurably missed and remain in our hearts forever.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Deerfoot South, 12281 – 40th Street SE, Calgary, AB) on Thursday, August 1, 2019 at 2:30 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Our hearts go out to you all. Don will be missed by all those who loved him and who’s lives he touched. A true giant among men.

Donald was a very proud Canadian ‘born and bred’ but a true ‘Scot’ at heart . . . . .

You can shed tears that he is gone
or you can smile because he has lived.
You can close your eyes and pray that he’ll come back
or you can open your eyes and see all he’s left us.
Your heart can be empty because you can’t see him
or you can be full of the love you shared.
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday
or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember him and only that he’s gone
or you can cherish his memory and let it live on.
You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back
or you can do what he’d want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

The Mallan Family, Stewarton, Ayrshire, Scotland.

  17. I had the privilege of working along side Don at Suncor … we always shared a good laugh and he would always have some witty comeback and his dry humor would always lighten the mood, no matter what was going sideways on the project.

The loss is enormous, and my heartfelt condolences to Tanya and the boys and his entire family. Please know that he was a great contributor to all that he did, and his Suncor family will miss him dearly…

    Dear Tanya, Kyle and Justin,
I worked with Don for only a few years, but we developed a very good relationship and a friendship that continued beyond work. A favorite memory for me is the excitement that he felt in taking the opportunity to take extended time off work to enjoy the quality experience of dedicating himself to you as a young family.
Those who knew Don as a skilled Engineer and Project Manager, appreciated him also as a fine person. You can be very proud of your husband and father.
I offer my deep condolences to you that must carry this heavy loss.

  23. Dear Tanya, Kyle, Justin and Mrs. Cunningham (Don’s mom):

Jane and I express our most sincere condolences for the Cunningham family.

We lost a great husband, father, son and friend. I had the pleasure and privilege of having Don as my friend since we were both 14 years old. From teaching me on how to drive a manual transmission shortly after we qualified for our driver licenses, to helping me with earning an A at university calculus and more recently to discussing and evaluating various financial derivatives, Don was always a very reliable friend.

Stay strong everyone, Don made everyone he met to be a better person. The FOB will miss you Donald!

  25. Hi Tanya,
My deepest condolences for your loss. It is shocking news as Don and I just connected a week before as he wished me Happy Birthday. He has reached out every year even after leaving Suncor on that day…just how he was!! He will be greatly missed by all and I will miss our philosophical tongue and cheek conversations around Sun Tzu!! Working with him is one of the highlights as he was dedicated and always focused on achieving results. I am still left speechless as I can’t believe this is real. I am traveling and not able to make the memorial service but would love to connect when I am back in town. Please do reach out when you have time.
