COWLES, Nicholas Sydney

September 30, 1942 – Fort William, Ontario
April 12, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Dad, Nicholas Sydney Cowles, on Friday, April 12, 2019, at home with his family by his side.

Dad was born September 30, 1942, in Fort William, Ontario and was raised in Fairview, Alberta. After high school he attended the University of Alberta. He and Mom were married in 1964, and moved to Calgary in 1965 after he received his degree in Pharmacy. Once in Calgary, Dad worked for Telstar Drugs and then owned Acadia Drug. In 1972 he bought Bowness Drug which he owned for thirty years until his retirement. During this time, he was very involved with the Alberta Pharmaceutical Association as a District Councillor, and then as President Elect.

Even though Dad was busy with work and very involved with his professional association, he enjoyed spending time with us girls, throwing a baseball, taking us fishing after dinner and in the summers, we would enjoy a family holiday. Dad was an avid curler and golfer. Through the winter, he and Mom spent many weekends at the Springbank Curling Club and he curled in a league through the week at the Calgary Winter Club. In the summer, he enjoyed golfing at Silver Springs Golf and Country Club with his friends and colleagues.

Dad has left to mourn his wife of fifty-five years, Sharon, his three girls Roxanne Cowles of Denman Island, BC, Rochenda Cowles-Tilt (George) of Malagash, NS, and Rochelle Cowles (Guy) of Calgary, AB; his grandchildren Alexander MacPhail, Aja Mae Cowles, Sydney Tilt, Hayden Tilt, Parker Tilt, Ian Tilt, Liam McGinnis, Callum McGinnis and Lachlan McGinnis. He is also survived by his brother Eugene (Lis) of Calgary, AB, and his mother Anna Cowles of Calgary, AB.

Our family would like to sincerely thank Dr. Serge Soolsma and Michele Heerema, both of whom made it possible to fulfill Dads wish to stay at home with us until the end.

A Celebration of Nicholas’ Life will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2019 from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. at Bowness Seniors Centre (6422 35 Ave NW, Calgary, AB). If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made to Bowness Seniors Centre, 6422 35 Ave NW, Calgary, AB T3B 1S6 Telephone: 403-286-4488.

In living memory of Nicholas Cowles, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE NW, CALGARY, AB T3G 2T3, Telephone: 403-241-0044.
