COWIE-THARP, Jean Elizabeth

December 29, 1921 – Virden, Manitoba
April 26, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Jean Cowie-Tharp; a wonderful mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and loyal friend.

Jean was born in Virden, Manitoba, raised in Woodnorth, attended college in Brandon and eventually went to work in Winnipeg. It is there that she met and married our father, James Cowie. They moved from British Columbia to Quebec with many stops in between for our dads work, until finally settling in Alberta in 1955. Jean loved her life in Calgary, raising her family, working in real estate, volunteering at Grace Presbyterian Church and enjoying her involvement with the Rotary Club, and let’s not forget about playing bridge! After our father’s death in 1982, Jean continued to work, play golf, and travel. At age 78 Jean married Bernie Tharp and they shared a wonderful retirement together, travelling and enjoying their families. After Bernie’s passing, Jean continued to live independently and did so up to her death. She passed away peacefully with her daughters at her bedside.

Jean is survived by her two daughters, Judith Uphold (John) and Susan Stanbury (Geoff); five grandchildren, Kelsea Forzani-Mannix (Frederick), Rory Uphold, Stevie Adriana Forzani, Cassen Uphold and Johnny Forzani (Tessa); three step grandchildren, Josh Stanbury (Sarah), Leah Stanbury and Remy Stanbury; three great grandchildren, Brooklyn-Rose Mannix, Frederick Mannix and Jackson Mannix; her brother Doug Richardson (Fran) and four wonderful nieces, Nola, Josie, Laura and Sharon.

Funeral Services will be held at Grace Presbyterian Church (1009 – 15th Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the Ranchmen’s Club. Condolences may be forwarded through If friends so desire, donations may to the Calgary Rotary Club, or Grace Presbyterian Church, 1009-15th Ave. SW Calgary, AB T2R 0S5.

In living memory of Jean Tharp, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

I feel so lucky to have known Jean, very casually in our Lakeview Bridge group. What an inspiration she was, and such a classy lady. Always a warm smile and kind words. We will miss her. Our sympathies to you all.

  5. Hi Judy, Susan and your families,
I am so sorry to have missed your Mother’s memorial service. I was still in Phoenix until very recently. I loved your Mother as a friend, and my substitute Mother. We went on golf trips and played bridge and spent hours together. Jean always made me smile. She loved her family beyond words. God gave her a wonderful life and she was able too look after herself until the end which is a true statement to the strong lady she was. She was always put together so beautifully and I heard her receive may compliments even near the end of Jean’s beautiful life. She shared her raspberries with me and of course I knew I was special then as you know not just anybody got those berries. Jean embodied life to the fullest, and I will miss her terribly. With the deepest sympathy to all of you and with warm wishes – Mary McPhee Because I do not have any addresses I could not send cards. I will however be sending a donation to the Stay-in-School Project the Rotary Club is heavily involved with as I am. Knowing Jean loved children this project is dedicated to assisting two Grade 6 students each year from lower income areas in Calgary and sponsoring them financially with all schooling costs until fourth year university. We have 66 children in the program. Some have graduated etc.
