COSTELLO, Wilma

July 31, 1930 – Barons, Alberta
September 14, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Wilma passed away on September 14, 2018 at the age of 88 years.

“Wilma was born into a farming family in Barons Alberta, the youngest of three sisters. Growing up on a farm, she developed a strong work ethic and a practical, no nonsense approach to making a good life for herself.

She received a diploma in Nursing from the Galt Hospital School of Nursing at Lethbridge. She was registered with the Alberta Association of Registered Nurses on December 18, 1952. M.E. Gow, a Superintendent of Nurses, Department of Public Health, after a 177 day probationary review pronounced her, “Excellent throughout. Has good executive ability.” She worked in public healthcare for many years and as a corporate nurse for a number of companies, including CIL Chemicals in Calgary.

Wilma met her husband “Ted” Costello, a widower with five children, at a singles dance. They were both first time attendees. They were married on September 17, 1971 and enjoyed a long, eventful partnership that lasted over forty years. As well as helping her husband raise five children, four of whom were teenagers and the youngest in elementary school when they married, Wilma became a doting grandmother of nine grandchildren. She supported Ted when they lost their eldest son Dick to cancer.

Wilma will be greatly missed by her four children Hugh (Christine), Kate (Steve), John (Cathy), Harry (Tammy), and nine grandchildren Emily, Hilary (Rick), Thomas, Colleen (Jesse), Sean, Marina, Ryan, Tim and Claire.

Wilma was predeceased by her husband Ted and her eldest son Dick. Wilma was also predeceased by her Sister Erna in 2014. She will be fondly remembered by the children she helped raise, her grandchildren, her sister Esta Hickman in Seattle Washington and many nieces and nephews and their families in both Alberta and Washington.

At Wilma’s request, there will be no memorial service held. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Wilma Costello, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE N.W. CALGARY, AB, T3G 2T3, Telephone: 403-241-0044.
