Lori, Sara, David and to all of Randy’s family and friends. I am so deeply sorry and would like to extend my heartfelt condolences on Randy passing. I am just stunned and speechless. What a guy. What a role model. The fun and laughs we shared at our golf outings are absolutely priceless, Randy’s friendship and great humor were gifts to us all. Randy will be missed a great, great deal and certainly never, ever forgotten. May Randy rest in peace and may you all find peace in at such a difficult time.

Lori – We are absolutely gutted by this terribly sad news. Randy was so devoted to you and Sara, and we know how deeply he will be missed by you. He was also an amazing friend and his absence from our lives will leave a gaping hole. We are currently travelling out of country and won’t be back in time to attend the service unfortunately; we are so sorry to miss it.

    Dearest Lori,
Like so many others, we find ourselves struggling to find the right words – any words. To lose someone like Randy – vibrant, life-embracing, complex and multi-talented – and at such an inexplicably young age, is simply too difficult to comprehend, let alone explain. Over the years, the opportunities to enjoy Randy’s company were infrequent – typically just once a year at Darin’s golf weekend – but I always came way from those interactions feeling grateful for the time with him: to chat, to learn and to laugh. We talked a lot about his climbing and his photos were always a highlight. We shared a common passion for cycling and reconfirmed every year that we had to organize a ride together. I’m so disappointed to have missed that opportunity. I know that amongst our “Well-in” brethren that he is being fondly remembered with love, affection and deep respect for all that he was and all that he brought out in the rest of us. Thinking of you and Sara, along with the rest of the family and your extended network of friends. We will organize a gathering here in Ottawa to celebrate the times we shared with Randy. In the meantime, you are in our thoughts and in our prayers.

    Dear Lori and Sara,
I am heartbroken to learn of Randy’s passing. Though we did not meet, I think the world of you, as you were Randy’s world.
His Sun Life family loved him deeply and will miss him dearly. Over the years, I have enjoyed many conversations with him and I have always admired his wisdom. Outside of work, we have enjoyed many talks of skiing and I know how passionate he was about it. Not many people got my passion for the sport as Randy did. I have seen dozens of photos of his backcountry adventures and he was as enthusiastic to show me the first, as he was the last, photo of a trip. I listened intently as I could hear the love and appreciation he had for the mountains and was glad to share it.

When I moved out to Canmore from Ontario, he had prepped me for the road I was to travel across the country by car. He was a caring, wonderful and wise man – such an inspiration to us all. May he rest in peace and may you find some comfort in your beautiful years and memories created with him, during this impossible time. My deepest condolences.

Lori, Sara, David, family and friends, it is always so hard to lose someone who is so dear and loved so much , like Randy was. For the short time we have known Randy, we all were touched by his warmth, his natural and friendly smile and his ability to engage you in interesting conversation.
Randy had an incredible ability to balance his family, work and outdoor adventures.
He was an anchor, calm and gentle and there was a lot of quiet wisdom that was ever present. His family meant the world to him. It showed in everything he did.
In life you hold dear and fond memories and attached to those memories are visual snapshots. We see Randy’s face beaming so proudly at Sara and David’s wedding in Tofino last year. He was so incredibly happy. The photos speak for themselves.
I also recall a conversation that my husband Steve and I had with Randy.
He recounted our son, David, coming to him about marrying his beautiful daughter.
He chuckled as he shared the story. “ David, he said did not traditionally ask for permission to marry Sara. Rather, he asked if he had my support to marry Sara.”
We are grateful for the precious shared memories we have had with Randy and family.
He has touched so many lives and will forever live in our hearts.

I have struggled to even start this note. Finding words to express the depth of our 43 years of friendship is a task for which I don’t feel prepared.

Aside from grief I feel grateful for the magnificent life you embraced and the opportunity I had to be a part of it. I will miss your gentle, good humour, your powerful intellect, and your wise counsel. I remember telling you once that after the loss of my dad, I had assigned you the task of being my chief source of counsel. It was a mantle you said you were not sure you could bear. In fact you excelled.

You always had my back. You lightened the burden of every challenge I have ever faced. Together we mourned the loss of our mutual beloved friend Mark four years ago. I hope you are sipping a fine single malt Scotch together now.

I am also grateful that there was not much left unsaid between us. We knew how we felt about each other because we said it out loud. There’s a lesson in that for all of us.

So many funny stories and jokes – many repeated a thousand times over the decades. Actually maybe just a dozen jokes. But they were funny. And later we’re told by a single word uttered. Our memories filled in the rest.

Randy. We will all miss you so much. We always said hello and goodbye with a hug. Oh what I’d give for one more of those. But I will save them now for Lori and Sara – for David, Rod and Joanne – for all your family, many friends and colleagues whose lives you so greatly enriched.

You climb now. We’ll all secure the line

“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.” (Robert Frost)

    Dear Lori and Sara,
Please accept my deepest sympathies for your loss. Like many who have left their remembrances here, I was privileged to know and work with Randy over 11 years at Sun Life. He was a remarkable colleague, mentor and friend. In all the conversations we had together, I never failed to learn from him professionally and personally. And, he possessed a wry sense of humour which I enjoyed very much too.

This Frost poem reminds me of Randy. He appreciated the challenges of taking the road less traveled, and as a result Randy accumulated a wealth of life experience, wisdom and knowledge that we all were fortunate to benefit from. Randy made a difference in all of our lives.

I will think of Randy out in the mountains he so enjoyed sharing with us through his pictures and stories…and will look for him over the next rise–

As a now retired but previously long standing member of the Sun Life Client Partnership Council, I came to know Randy well and we became friends through our many meetings over the years. He always offered a smiling face and shared many stories of his outdoor escapades, and I must admit that I was a little jealous of his ability to enjoy life to the fullest. He was inspiration to me to not let age get in the way of everything that is ours to take advantage of in the world. As Larry so eloquently wrote above about Randy, I too feel the same way. I am now retired and I was a member of that same Sun Life Council. Randy always respected each and every member’s view and he always would make us think outside the box. That made us a stronger group providing feedback in order for Sun Life to create great products and services for members. Randy loved life and I enjoyed hearing about his travels and his love of family. My deepest sympathies to you all at this difficult time.

Lori I was devastated when I heard about Randy. I am deeply sorry for this crushing loss. My condolences to your daughter Sara as well. I know the two of you were the centre and light of his life.

I worked with Randy years ago and while we hadn’t seen each other in quite some time, considered him a friend, someone with whom I expected to reconnect. So very sad now.

He was brilliant and caring, a thinker I so admired and from whom I learned much. I can’t even remember how much we laughed, over the craziest, silliest things at work and in life. What a joy that was. I will never forget his smile. I know for sure he touched many people this way – I just can’t even express how much I liked and respected him, for his decency and kindness and ability to listen to everyone.

I wish I lived closer. Know that I and so many others are holding you and Sara in the light.

Lori just heard the news and am so sorry for your loss. Randy was a bright and generous man and I am better for having met him. Randy was a work mate at Sun and we did cross paths there a fair bit but I will remember him best for taking me ice climbing a number of times, including introducing me to the ‘screaming barfies’ all too common with early morning climbs at -25! Strong, patient and knowledgeable is how I remember him. We carry on together with our memories of him. Lori and I will be raising a glass on Vancouver Island Friday, a nice wine he might have recommended perhaps.

Lori, Sara and David, I was so devastated to hear of Randy’s passing. Although I only met him last summer when David and Sara got married, he made a deep impression on me. Loving husband and father, smart, engaging, friendly, fit and adventurous, he built a perfect life for himself and his family. Though he was taken far too soon, he rode out of this life on a chariot of love from so many. He will be keenly missed for all of the light and love he brought to the world, but he will always live on in the hearts and memories of the many lives he touched. Randy was the perfect example of a life well lived. Hugs and sincere condolences to all of you.

    Lori,
Our condolences. You do not know us and we do not know you as we never met. We only met Randy, once…Several people were there trying to help out. I looked at Randy’s face, eyes closed…I took Randy’s left hand and I opened the palm; it was sweat in there and I thought “this is a good sign”. Back home in Calgary, tears in my eyes, I looked at my husband Ion and I do not know why I tried to sing “Raglan Road” for Randy (at that time we even didn’t know his name). Probably the poem/song has several different meanings. Lori, our Goodbye to Randy, please play Luke Kelly “Raglan Road”. Rest in peace Randy!

    Lori & Sara,

I had the pleasure to work with Randy a few years back at Sun Life Financial. Randy was wonderful to work with and was the type of colleague that I strove to be like as the professionalism and knowledge he carried were respected by everyone. We worked on a few projects and he took the upmost pride to deliver the best that was possible. I was always amazed with his stories of his skiing or hiking trips. These were the kinds of adventures I could only dream of, yet these were routine weekend excursions for him, a man 20 years older than I. The ideas he had about where our business is going (or should go) was always insightful and continuously made me what to learn more from him.

He spoke of you both often and it was without doubt that he loved you very much.

I had been trying to book a meeting for a beer just to hear what was on his mindless . I regret not getting that meeting booked.

He will be remembered fondly and his passing leaves us all with the memory of a great man who left us far too early.

He left a impact on people wherever he went, whether the time he spent with them was long or brief. I admired that he always seemed to live life to the fullest and that is something that we can all hope to learn from him. Every time I saw Randy he had a smile on his face and I can only hope that he is smiling on us wherever he is now.

Dear Lori, Sara, David and all the family,

We were so very fortunate to have had you as neighbours for several years. Our first encounter with Randy led us to refer to him as Randy, the Opimian Wine guy, famous for bringing our cul du sac together for fine wine tastings. As we got to know Randy better, he became Randy the extreme outdoor adventurer- who loved climbing, skiing, cycling and more! While we are no longer neighbours, we have grown closer as friends with gatherings and dinner parties, and Randy will always be remembered as Randy our dear friend who loved his family and life to the fullest.

Deepest condolences Lori, Sara, David and family. I had the privilege of working with Randy for many years. Earlier in my career, Randy and I worked together on servicing a large client. Randy was supportive and elevated the relationship with his talent to strategize and think things through. He was an amazing mentor, and I could always count on Randy to have thought provoking discussions and respectful banter. I have been fortunate to continue to work with Randy in some capacity over the past 15 years, and even though we were in different cities as our home base, there was never a doubt that we were part of the same work family. Randy always seemed to be able to make time to chat about his next adventure and share stories about the most important people in his life, his family. Dear Lori, Sara, David,
It is with great sadness that I learned of Randy’s passing. I met him as Parliamentary Intern in 1986. I remember his sharp intelligence, his wit, his sporting abilities (fond memories of an improvised football game in an Ottawa park on Grey cup Sunday 1986) and his mischievous smile. Randy is forever linked in my mind with the most serious giggles attack I have ever experienced. It was during a dinner in Jerusalem’s King David’s hotel in June 87 and Randy’s dubious expression in front of a plate of gefilte fish started me laughing. It lasted half an hour and was very soothing. I am so sorry he left us so young. My heartfelt condolences to you and all who loved him dearly. Janique

Randy and I lost touch for a long time, but re-established it over the past few years and had a lot of very interesting (online) conversations, sometimes lasting more than hour.
