COLWELL, Murray Charles

December 2, 1928 – Calgary, Alberta

October 4, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Dr. Murray Colwell of Calgary, AB, passed away on Thursday, October 4, 2018 at the age of 89 years.

Murray was born in Calgary, AB on December 2, 1928. His early years were spent on a farm near Dalemead, AB. He initially rode his tricycle and later a horse to the one-room Strathmead School. He completed Grade nine there and then went to Mount Royal College to complete high school.

Murray attended the University of Alberta where he graduated in Medicine. He and Priscilla (Pic) were married in 1954, after that he interned for two years at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton. Following, he moved the family to Toronto, to study paediatrics at the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children for three years. After completing a one year specialization in Pittsburgh, the family returned to Calgary where he practised with the Calgary Associate Clinic until his retirement in 1988.

Murray loved working in wood and one of his proudest possessions was a dining room table that he created which contained inlays of fine woods. He did beautiful carvings; creating cradles for grandchildren and numerous Hope chests which he gave to friends and family containing intricately carved tops and sides.

He and Pic travelled extensively. His favourite trip was to Egypt, but they also went to Tanzania, China, Morocco, Singapore, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. He also enjoyed sailing in the Caribbean, Haida Gwai, and on the QE2. When they were not on a trip, they might be found on the deck of their cabin on Denman Island, looking out over the Salish Sea, or working to create an “English country garden” on the property. He liked gardening and potted plants. For many years, he forced bulbs and would arrive at people’s doorsteps with pots of colourful tulips or hyacinth during the darkest and coldest time of the year.

Murray is survived by his daughter and her family, Judith (Michael), Patrick and Sara Taylor of Calgary; his sons, Patrick (Jan), Katie and Erin Colwell of Calgary, Grant (Allison), Mackenzie and Zoe Colwell of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Bradley Colwell of Toronto; and his sister Wilda (Doug) Allen of Calgary. He is also survived by one great-grandson.

Murray was predeceased by his wife, Priscilla (Pic) Colwell (nee Murray), his sister, Doris Colwell and his parents, Charles and Margaret Colwell.

Memorial Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Thursday, December 27, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Condolences may be forwarded through

I am so sorry for your loss. I was introduced to Dr. Colwell in spring 1975 when my baby son started having seizures. All of my boys went to see him and he called them all Skipper. He was a wonderful, quiet, compassionate man.
