COLBORNE, Jeanne (Mary Ann)

January 1, 1925 – Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan
July 13, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with profound sadness that we announce that Jeanne Colborne passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 13 at age 94. Jeanne was predeceased by her husband of 63 years Robert, daughter Dawn, mother Lilly, father Francois, brother George and sister Antoinette.

Those left to mourn her passing and celebrate her life include her twin brother, John Poitras (Norreen); and her loving children and their spouses, Rick (Lori), Lynne Brennan (Dennis), Michael (Barbara), and Catherine Vogelgesang (Rob). She will be greatly missed by her nine grandchildren, Leah Adam, Erin Brennan, Mallory Brennan, Sarah Wever, Shane Vogelgesang, Kyle Vogelgesang, Celeste Colborne, James Colborne, Nicole Vogelgesang; her four great-grandchildren, Austin Wever, Alex Adam, Bentley Wever, Lilly Lear and relatives and friends.

Jeanne was born on January 1, 1925 in Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan to Lily and Francois Poitras. Jeanne was a twin and along with her brother John their birth was quite the novelty. People from throughout the area came to visit them as they were the first known twins born in Northern Saskatchewan on New Years Day! She enjoyed a loving childhood. Jeanne and her brother John had a dog sled team they used to get to school with in the winter and rode a pony to school in the summer. Jeanne graduated from St. Paul’s Hospital School of Nursing (Saskatoon) in 1948 and together with a friend went to nurse at the University Hospital in Edmonton with dreams of travelling across Canada with their nursing degrees. In that same year she met, fell in love and wed Robert (Bob) Colborne. Jeanne and Bob were the loving parents of two sons Rick and Michael and three daughters, Lynne, Dawn and Catherine. Jeanne was a devoted daughter, sister and wife, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend. Always positive she was an extraordinary woman whose qualities of love, devotion and grace endured throughout her life. Jeanne was caring and compassionate, respected and admired who continually demonstrated to her family that you can find happiness by embracing your faith and those you love. Nothing was more important – than her family. Jeanne was a dedicated wife, nurturing mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Jeanne’s pride and joy were her precious grand and great-grand children that she so enormously treasured. In 1956 Jeanne and Robert moved to Wetaskiwin where she was a contributing member of her community. She was a member of the Catholic Women’s League, as well as the Kinettes. Blessed with a beautiful singing voice she joined the Catholic Church Choir. Years later the family moved to Calgary where she continued her love for singing as a member of St. Cecilia’s Choir for many years. For over 25 years Jeanne delivered Meals on Wheels and was a steadfast canvasser for the Heart and Stroke fund. Jeanne’s favourite summer place was their cabin at Ma-Me-O Beach, AB where she spent most of her summers enjoying entertaining and playing with her grandchildren. She loved to travel with her friend Muriel Mawer and her sister Antoinette and spent many summers travelling with her granddaughters Erin and Mallory to their Irish dancing competitions. Jeanne was cherished by her family and friends and will be deeply missed and never forgotten.

Special thanks to the caregivers on the 3rd floor Amica Britannia and Home Instead for their compassionate care. Jeanne’s quality of life was increased by their love, warmth and kindness. We are grateful beyond what words can express to the team for their help in keeping Jeanne comfortable while, surrounded by her children and family.

Family and friends will join together to celebrate the Funeral Mass which will be celebrated at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church (321 – 90th Avenue S.E., Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, July 17, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow at the Church with a private graveside service after the reception. 4. Mary Beth Manarey (Toole)

Your mom was one of those women of faith and grace that i always admired. She always had a warm and wonderful welcome where ever we happened to run into her; Mameo, church, the Renoir or in Calgary just out and about. It is so evident that her seeds of faith, generosity and kindness continue to bloom in the amazing family that you are. All her “good bits” live on in each soul she touched in her journey….and that is a lot of “good bits”. Be assured of our prayers from the Toole Shed! Welcome home good and faithful servant!
