CHUTE, Richard (Dick) Hanley

May 7, 1940 – Caledonia, Nova Scotia
May 11, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta

Richard (Dick) Hanley Chute died unexpectedly in Calgary on the evening of Thursday, May 11, 2017 at the age of 77.

Richard is survived by his wife of 43 years, Joanne (nee Knight); his sister, Jeannette (Denton) Orde; his sister-in-law, Margaret Van Egmond; numerous nieces and nephews and many cousins including two special cousins, Sandra Emery and Candace Lang.

He is predeceased in death by his parents Bernard and Lois; his brothers, Malcom, Byron, Kenneth and Melvin; his sister, Carolyn (Bruce) Peach and his brother-in-law, Lawrence.

Richard was born May 7, 1940, in Caledonia, Nova Scotia. He attended the Nova Scotia Teachers’ College in Truro Nova Scotia, took courses at Acadia University in Wolville, Nova Scotia, and then completed more university work at the University of Lethbridge from which he earned a B. Ed. degree. He worked as a teacher in Nova Scotia, Quebec and Alberta.

In 1983, Richard, along with his wife Joanne, became the owner and manager of Teach R Toys later called Castle Toys. Richard stepped back from day to day involvement with Castle Toys in 2010 and started retirement. He had a passion for the local arts scene. As a long time season ticket holder, Richard regularly attended the Calgary Opera. He also took pride in finding and supporting up and coming local artists. Richard enjoyed outdoor activities. A day fondly remembered by Dick and the Van Egmond family was a glorious day that they spent tubing on the Gaspereau River in Nova Scotia. In 2006, Dick made a canoe trip with the Outdoor Pursuits Programme at the University of Calgary, down the Stikine River from Telegraph Creek, BC, to the delta of the Stikine at Wrangle, Alaska. Richard particularly enjoyed, and frequently enjoyed, abundant quantities of good food while entertaining family and friends.

At his request no formal services will be held. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. The family requests that in lieu of floral tributes, donations of time, or financial resource, be made to the charity of your choice.

In living memory of Richard Chute, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

I wish to express my condolences to Dick’s family. As a former fellow-student at North Queens Rural High in Caledonia, N.S., I remember his love of books, reading and his search for academic success. He was liked by all : quiet, unassuming and kind . He will be missed and his name will be placed on our “Page of Tribute” for NQRHS students who have passed.

  9. Dear Joanne,

We recently formed a Fort Macleod group (over 800 to date) on Facebook sharing memories of our days from grade school to high school. Both your and Dick’s name came up several times as teachers liked and respected by many. It was with both shock and sadness that we heard of Dick’s recent passing. My deepest condolences to you and the family. I will always have fond memories of you both.

So sorry and saddened Joanne, have only fond memories of Dick from our time together at Jordan’s and when I worked with him on the basketball team in ’67-’68. Who can forget his laugh! He was a great mentor to me at an important time in life, as were you for many of us. You were two of the most respected and well-liked teachers in our high school years. What more can one hope than to leave a positive legacy in the lives of others. Best wishes.

Very sorry to hear of Mr. Chute’s passing; my most vivid memory is one specific day in class that a spooky story was read in a low voice and the class was indeed spooked, by the last few words that he uttered VERY LOUDLY!
You both are remembered very fondly, and please know that you are in our thoughts today.

    Dear Joanne and Family,
I was surprised and saddened to learn of the passing of our adventurous friend, Dick. Although I have not been in touch with the famous tag team Dick and Joanne (not necessarily in that order) you were on my mind on May 10. While returning from a Picture Butte golf game with an old friend, I detoured into memory lane at Nobleford. The objective? To revisit a great fun weekend organized by Miss Knight, one of our jolly group of teachers from Gleichen School in the l960s. I’m sure you remember it well, Joanne, as Nobleford was your home. Old friends are the best and we are enriched by their presence and by their memory. Remember the good times and be well, Joanne.

    Dear Joanne and family,

I was shocked to learn of Dick’s untimely passing. Although I have not seen you folks for a long time, you were on my mind specifically on May 10 last week. I had been in Picture Butte for golf with an old friend and decided on a memory visit to Nobleford on the way home to High River. The memories were of a Nobleford vacation getaway weekend at the home of Miss Knight, one of our jolly band of teachers at Gleichen School in the l960s. I hadn’t been back since and to see notice of Dick’s passing and Joanne’s loss the very next day was upsetting. Dick was a friend and he will be missed. If I can be of any assistance, don’t hesitate to call.

Mr. Chute was my English teacher in Fort Macleod. He was always a sharp dresser, had lots to tell us & was a tough person to make laugh, but when he did it came from the bottom of his belly. Continue on your journey to the other side & continue to teach like you were put on this earth to do. Thanks for everything, you left an impression on me!!

    Dear Joanne,
I am so very sorry to hear of Dick’s untimely passing. He was such a warm, kind person. I have many, many fond memories of Dick in the Teach R Toys days and beyond to the Castle Toys adventures. I learned so much from both of you, but mostly I remember feeling part of a family. We worked hard and shared so much. It was a proud moment to have you both at my wedding. Words are not enough to convey how much I feel for you in the loss of your soulmate and best friend. My thoughts are with you. Much love.
