CHARBONNEAU, Alexa Angela

April 28, 1995 – Calgary, Alberta
July 29, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Alexa Angela Charbonneau of Cochrane, AB, passed away on Monday, July 29, 2019 at the age of 24 years.

Alexa was born in Calgary, AB. She attended Cochrane High School and graduated with her Resource Room diploma. Alexa was a member of the Cochrane Challengers, and Special Olympics Swimming. Alexa enjoyed challenger bowling, challenger baseball, boating, and dance. She was particularly excited and proud of herself when dumping out numerous puzzles, matching shapes and completing them all. She thrived on praise and making people laugh. Alexa loved to be with family. She loved to help in the kitchen and to shop with her mom, Bonnie. She liked to have treats from Starbucks or Tim’s with her “sister darling” and best friend Carly. With her dad Steve, she wanted to help make breakfast on weekends and she loved to go for rides in the red car to the airport to watch the planes, especially if it included a “secret” from McDonalds. Alexa loved the lake, boating and was the spotter for those who skied, boarded or surfed. She loved flowers and helping her mom in the garden using her own little watering can. Spotting a ripe cherry tomato, picking it and popping it into her mouth brought her so much happiness. Her most memorable vacations were the yearly vacations to the Shuswap to boat and watch and wave at the trains “Toot Toot!”, and to travel to the Turks and Caicos for the beach. As an adult, Alexa attended CLAS in Cochrane, where she continued to love life with her friends and workers. Alexa had a deep love and affection for many of her workers who became a very important part her life. Alexa was a sweet, gentle, genuine, honest, thankful, polite soul whose love for people came without conditions or trappings. Her family, dog and friends were all she needed in life. In her own special way she made all who knew her and loved her, better people. Her favourite quotes to her family were, “I help you Mumma?”, “Wuv woo”, “Kiss me”, “Hug me”, “Sister Darling” and “More gas Dad.”

Alexa is survived by her father and mother, Steve and Bonnie, of Cochrane, AB; sister, Carly Charbonneau, of Cochrane, AB; her grandparents, Ruth and Glenn Gordon, of Kingston, ON, and Sherle and Larry McLachlin, of Collingwood, AB; aunts, Heather (Ken Cook) Charbonneau of Calgary, AB, and Gaie (Mike) McComb of Brampton, ON; cousins, Shannon (Mike) Carter, and Andrew McComb; as well as her pet dog Gerry.

A Memorial Service will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Cochrane, 369 Railway Street, Cochrane, AB), on Friday, August 9, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.

If friends so desire in lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made directly to Special Olympics Calgary, 3676 – 48th Ave. N.E., Calgary, AB T3J 5C8 Telephone: (403) 735 – 1022, the Epilepsy Association of Calgary, 316, 4014 Macleod Trail South, Calgary, Alberta T2G 2R7 Telephone: (403) 230-2764, www.epilepsycalgary.com, or to the not-for-profit Cochrane Challengers Recreation Club. Dear Steve, Bonnie and Carly,
Words cannot describe how sorry we are to hear of the passing of Alexa. You were so loving and supportive of her in so many ways, it was such a joy to see. Bowling will not be the same without Alexa announcing whose turn it is. You were the only parents we knew that made a zipline for their kids. Unfortunately, we are unable to attend the memorial, but want you to know that you will be in our thoughts and prayers during the difficult days ahead.
    Much love and hugs,

  5. We cherish the memories of countless summers at the lake, Alexa ‘shishing’ off the dock with John and being so excited when a fish actually bit, Alexa being the only person on the planet allowed to call Paul, Paula and he never batted an eye because it was Alexa. She loved Finn, ‘wing’ Saturday’s and all the activity that came with it. We will never forget these moments – she made the world better and we are less without her sweetness. Please know you are all held in our hearts and prayers as you grieve your unimaginable loss.

We were privileged to have had Alexa share a part of our lives. She was a delightful, happy and positive member of the resource rooms she shared with our daughter Megan at both Bearspaw School and then Cochrane High. Alexa’s love for her friends was wonderful to watch and she taught all of us how to be better people. We will miss her excitement at bowling. Bonnie, Steve and Carly, although this is a very difficult time for you and your families, we wanted you to know that Alexa grew into an amazing young woman and led a fulfilled life thanks to your support and love for her along the way. You raised a truly amazing girl whose heart touched so many including ours. Stay strong.

    Dear Steve, Bonnie & Carly,

I am so sorry to learn of Alexa’s passing. I have honestly been wrestling with what to say to you because there are no words that can lighten this grief. I feel so badly for you and cannot even begin to imagine the emotions that you must have right now.

I had only met Alexa on a few occasions but remember her to be a sweet girl. She will always have the title as being our #1… the Charbonneau family’s first great-grandchild. I will never forget how eager Nana was to show me Alexa’s artwork, gifts and photos. I used to tease Nana saying, “Alexa is making the rest of us look bad” LOL. I also remember Nana panicking if she could not find her chain from Alexa that she wore proudly every day. Nana even used to hide it under her pillow at bedtime to prevent robbers from finding it 🙂

I started this message with an extremely heavy heart but these little memories have slightly lightened it. From all of the online condolences that I have read, Alexa was clearly a special, little lady. She is a Charbonneau that will never be forgotten.

My deepest condolences to you, Auntie Shirley & Larry, Heather & Ken and Bonnie’s family.
