CARDIFF, Ruth Annabell

February 5, 1923 – Vanrena, Alberta
August 29, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Ruth Annabell Cardiff (nee McFarlane) passed away peacefully on August 29, 2018 at the age of 95.

As a young woman Ruth moved from the Peace River country to the big city of Edmonton, AB and started a career with Woodward’s, where she would work for eighteen years moving up through the ranks. In the late 1950’s she met Gerry and wed in 1960. Ruth and Gerry were a great team, in the beginning they worked side by side in the construction camps where Ruth took care of Gerry and their young children as well as managing the camp and keeping the work crews well fed so Gerry could keep his concentration on the work as his crew cleared cut lines and made roads all over northern Alberta. This team work lasted throughout their time together. Ruth’s first love was family, and she had a big one, from her parent’s numerous siblings and their families to her own siblings and their families, to Gerry’s siblings and their families. Ruth was always surrounded by people she loved. There was nothing she enjoyed more than a family reunion, barbeque or potluck, many of which were held at her home where it was not unusual to find twenty to thirty or more relatives enjoying fresh baked goods, cabbage rolls and all the dishes she was famous for. Ruth was a great entertainer and her gatherings were always full of good food, laughter and humor. When not entertaining Ruth loved to travel, and was an avid sports fan, holding Calgary Stampeder season tickets for over forty years and cheering on the Flames in the good times and the bad. Ruth leaves behind a legacy of friendliness, kindness and playfulness that will be missed by the many people she has touched in her life. She was always willing to give a hand, whether canvassing for the heart foundation, giving blood for 30 years, giving to charity, giving people a place to stay or a warm meal. To Ruth a stranger was just a friend she had not yet met.

Ruth will be greatly missed by her daughter and son-in-law, Eileen and Ray Puczko; two sons and daughter-in-law, Bill and Patti Cardiff, and Paul Cardiff; as well as her grandchildren, Krysten (Brandon) Schmid, Allyson Puczko, Vanessa Puczko, Tyler (Amanda) Cardiff and Rylee (Jonah) Philips; and her great-grandchildren Tatum and Keagan Cardiff. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins and their extended families.

She was predeceased by her husband of thirty-three years, Gerald “Gerry”; her parents, William “Bill” and Ethel McFarlane; two brothers, Robert “Bert”, William “Bill”; and her sister Jean.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle N.W., Calgary, AB), on Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. Reception to follow at the funeral home. Graveside Service to follow at Mountain View Memorial Gardens, (1605 100 St SE, Calgary, AB).

If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Salvation Army, 1731 29th Street SW Calgary, AB, T3C 1M6, on line at www.salvationarmy.ca, or by phone 403-410-1112. The family would like to thank and offer their appreciation for all the great staff at the Sage Hill Retirement Residence for the care and genuine friendliness they showed our Mother during her stay.
