CARACCIOLO, Nicola “Nick”

May 21, 1925 – Cavallerizzo, Italy
June 22, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with profound sadness to announce the passing of Nicola Caracciolo, on Friday, June 22, 2018 at the age of 93.

Nicola was predeceased by his loving wife, Ida Caracciolo, they were together since 1954. He was also recently predeceased by his grandson Agostino (Stacy).

Nicola is survived by his two daughters, Armelinda (Pasquale) and Ilda (Giuseppe); grandchildren, Lisa (Augusto), Idamaria, Pietro; and great-grandsons, Michael, Anthony, Nicola.

At the age of 26, on Tuesday, November 27, 1951, Nicola gathered up the courage to step on the Saturnia Ship, porting out of Naples, Italy, destined for a new life in Canada. After ten days, he arrived in Halifax on the day of Santa Nicola, December 6. Two days later, Nicola was on a train to Quebec City, then on to Montreal and ultimately arriving in Flin Flon, Northern Manitoba on December 13, where he was put in poor working conditions in brutally cold temperatures. Gratefully surviving such an ordeal, he was blessed to be on a train to Winnipeg, where he spent Christmas Day. Nicola arrived in Calgary, his forever home on December 26, 1951.

On Monday, April 7, 1952, he started to work for the city of Calgary, doing what he loved most, getting his hands dirty working with the soil. Most of Calgary’s trees, including the landscape at the Calgary Zoo were planted by Nicola. His spirit lives on through the life these trees give to this city. Nicola retired with the city of Calgary in 1990 as a respected foreman, who was loved by many.

Nicola was a hard worker. He believed that everyone should be devoted to making each day count. He was a man who was not afraid to say it, exactly the way it is. He was the best storyteller with the most contagious laugh and the life of the party who would make everyone feel welcomed in his home. Nicola found tranquility in his garden, growing his vegetables and making his stews. Nicola will be greatly missed by all those who were so fortunate to know him.

  3. I’m not sure dad what I’m going to do now. The house is already to quiet for my liking. I will never hear you talking to yourself or calling me from the bottom of the stairs or knocking at why kitchen window. Hockey and WWE will never be the same ever again. I will miss you like crazy. I’m so proud to call you my dad. I will always cherish the happy days, the picnics fishing camping trips. You have seen the world and how it has changed in 93 years. I love you. I miss you. Now you and mom are together again doing everything you guys always did together. Enjoy your new life and tell all the angels your stories now. I know they will enjoy them just as much as we did. Take it easy dad. Until we meet again. Ilda

  14. Augusto Casali :

Nannu, you welcomed me into the family with such ease. 15 years ago, when I entered your home for the first time, we hit it off right away when I started to speak Italian with you.

It just wasn’t the same not having you supervising me mowing the lawn yesterday. Then I knew you were looking down laughing while I couldn’t get the weed wacker to work.

Family dinners will not be the same without your stories. Drinking wine and watching hockey without you will not be the same.

Having you ask me why I’m not at work, when I was on a day off, will be missed.

Asking or should I say insisting on taking home food you just made and letting you know how it was will be greatly missed.

    You’re a legend, Nannu.

You left big shoes to fill, but we will all do our best to make you proud.

    Sincerely, you grandson-in-law, Augusto

Dad, you knew everything I was going through asking me always what is the matter I would say nothing, but you knew, then you would” say, ma eat something”, I say I did, “oh ya” you replayed. I bring you food then you would say,” you brought me food so you didn’t have to eat”.
Dad, I have no words to say, just Thank you with all my heart for giving me everything I needed. I hope mom was there with open arms to greet you. I love you and miss so much. Love you always, Armelinda.
