CAMERON, E Marie

November 20, 1933 – Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan
July 12, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Born in Moose Jaw Saskatchewan on November 20, 1933, Marie passed away at the Sarcee Hospice on July 12, 2018, moments after receiving a pastoral blessing.

She was raised in Moose Jaw and later moved to Calgary for high school. She met and married R. Garey Cameron while in nurses training at the Holy Cross Hospital. Together they raised five children. Her motherly influence extended far beyond her children and grandchildren. Extended family, many friends and neighbours have all expressed what a strong and positive influence Marie had on their lives.

She was a very involved mother and community volunteer. She was part of a group mothers from Kingsland community, that established and coached a girls’ fastball program. Learning the game through the rule book she went on to coach provincial championship teams. Marie volunteered on the Alberta Track and Field Association executive and as an official at countless track meets including the World Student Games in Edmonton. She coordinated hundreds of volunteers at the downtown Calgary 1988 Olympic Visitors Centre. She volunteered at the Food Bank, Inn from the Cold and with the senior’s ski club. In later years she was an active participant with Memory Plus and was eager to support those individuals caring for loved ones with dementia. She led a very vibrant life and nurtured her family and supported her community to the very end. She was gracious and appreciative the care provided to her during her final journey.

Marie was predeceased by her brother, Herbert (Betty) Corns and is survived by her husband R Garey Cameron, her five children, Steven (Brenda) Cameron, Barb (Tim) Shaw, Diane (Dean) Childs, Bruce (Macarena) Cameron, William (Paula) Cameron and by her fourteen grandchildren, Dylan, Clifford, Lewis, Amanda, Christian, Sarah, Claire, Michelle, Nicolas, Jamal, Marianna, Daniela, William, Connie and five great-grandchildren, Nora, Vada, James, Patrick and Ava Marie. She is also survived by her brother Don Corns and his children, Cathy, Marie, Chris, Roger and Michael, who were very dear to her and by Garey’s brother, Cal and sister Lois and their children, she is also survived by five of her brother Herb’s children.
Marie passed buoyed by her faith and at peace with her life. As the mother of our family, she will be mourned, but remain our beacon as we all move forward remembering to live our lives valuing our families, our communities and our service to God.

Condolence Messages

  1. David Hogan :

Please accept my condolences for your loss. I only had the opportunity of meeting your mother fairly recently. Her ability to face the challenges that she encountered with clear eyes and a brave heart were admirable as was her devotion to Garey. Like you I take solace that she left us at peace with herself.

  3. We met Marie on our Friday morning walks at Glenmore. She was always thinking of others and she always took the time to listen. If she complained about anything it was that we weren’t walking fast enough. Haha
We met Marie late in life but the impact she had on us was huge and will last a lifetime. Such a special, strong and gracious woman. She will be missed.
We send heartfelt condolences to the entire family.

I am so sorry for your loss and my heart felt condolences go out to all the immediate and extended family. We were so fortunate to have Marie enter our lives when we arrived to Kingsland from Vancouver. Her friendship with my mother Laurel created a lasting bond. Whenever I saw Marie for an occasional lunch or when I think of her, it is with the never ceasing smile on her face and her easy laugh. As her obituary certainly shares with us , she has left quite a legacy and she was a model for a life well lived. Marie will be missed very much.

  20. My cousin and my godmother, Marie was a loving and supportive woman to my mom and our families – a legacy left not only to us but to all those she touched. We enjoyed a special relationship over a lifetime, one of acceptance, celebration and respect. Our times together were uplifting – filled with laughter and sharing. She was the strength of the family but never was that a burden, only a joy. Her sense of humour and outlook on life were always there through easy and difficult times alike.
