BURRILL, Geraldine Shirley (nee Estabrooks)

July 2, 1930 – Sackville, New Brunswick
August 3, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Geraldine S. Burrill at the age of 88. Geraldine, fondly known as Shirley to family and friends, grasped onto her precious Lord’s hand and entered paradise on August 3, 2018.

Shirley spoke the universal language of music fluently and enriched the lives of so many as an educator and church musician. She lived life with passion and exuberance and derived great joy from serving alongside her husband in church ministry. Hospitality came naturally to Shirley and she loved to host gatherings for friends and family. She was a gracious hostess.

She is survived by her loving husband of sixty-eight years, Rev. Prescott Burrill; sons and daughters-in-law, Harold and Frances and John and Anne Marie; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial Service will be held at Varsity Acres Presbyterian Church (4612 Varsity Drive N.W., Calgary, AB) on Thursday, August 9, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the Church. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Shirley Burrill, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, CALGARY, AB, T2E 2V6, Telephone: 403-276-2296.

  7. Dear Prescott, Harold, John and families,
My deepest sympathy to all of you at the passing of your wife, mother and grandmother.
Shirley was a wonderful lady who became my Porcelain Art student over twenty five years ago at Confederation Park +55 Activity Centre. She brought her enthusiasm, friendliness, compassion and joy to every class, and if anyone was carrying a heavy burden she promised to pray for them. Her wonderful gift of kindness was often shown as she would bring “Sweet Marie” bars or “Rocky Road” oatmeal cookies to share with the class at coffee time, served on one of the many porcelain pieces she had painted. Her genuine gift of caring was felt by everyone in our classes including the newest students. Her wonderful spirit will be truly missed this fall as we return to the classroom.
It is my prayer that God will surround all of you with His peace, His love, His provision and His tender comfort as you reflect on the gift of Shirley’s life. God bless you all as you walk through this valley together.
    Blessings,
    Glenda Lenz

  12. Rev. Prescott Burrill and family,
I taught with Shirley at Colonel Macleod years ago. Teaching there could be challenging as well as rewarding and I remember Shirley for her positive attitude and continuous smile. When our mother died, you officiated at her funeral. It was like having an old friend there. My sister also had a connection with you as you also officiated at a member of my brother-in law’s family. I wanted you to know that you and Shirley touched our lives profoundly and our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.
    Regards,
    Judy Clark

  17. Scott Cunningham :

    Dear Rev Burrill and Family,
My sincere condolences in the passing of Mrs Burrill.
Your wife, mother, grandmother, mentor touched many lives through her music. Mrs Burrill taught myself and three of my four siblings music through the years at Senator Pat and Aberhart. Mrs Burrill touched all our lives with the gift of music and we continue with music as part of our lives to this day, some 40 years later. I still pick up a saxophone and play and that legacy lives on because of Mrs Burrill.
My sincere condolences, Scotty Cunningham (Scooter)
