BURGESS, Valeria Veronica

December 11, 1927 – April 12, 2018

Val beloved wife of Kenneth Lucas Burgess of Calgary, AB, passed away on April 12, 2018 at the age of 90 years.

Born in Lipovske, Revuce, Czechoslovakia Val immigrated to Canada with her mother to join her father. After completing high school, Val went to Calgary to work for the Alberta Wheat Pool. In December 1949, she married Ken and in the following year her daughter Linda was born. Ken’s career with CN Rail took them to various towns until they moved to Whitecourt in 1967 where they remained until moving to Calgary in 1999.

Val had many passions that included knitting, gardening, camping, fishing and a talent for cooking and baking. She was also an avid sports fan, following the Stampeders, Flames and Blue Jays. She was a devout Catholic who put a high importance on family.

Besides her loving husband, Ken, Val is survived by her daughter Linda McLaughlin; granddaughter Erin McLaughlin, and extended family Mary Jacko (Jerry), Bill Burgess, and Tom McLaughlin, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Val was predeceased by her parents, George and Helen Jacko; brother John Jacko; sisters Louise Czajkowsky (Eugene), Justene Jacko, and son-in- law Jim McLaughlin.

The family wishes to thank to the staff and home care personnel at Lake Bonavista Village, the doctors and staff at CareWest Glenmore Park, and a very special thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff on Unit 73 of the Rockyview General Hospital for the outstanding care of Val and her family during her final days.

Funeral Services will be held at St. Cecilia Catholic Church (321-90 Avenue SE, Calgary) on Thursday, April 19, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow at the parish hall. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, St. Cecilia Conference 321-90 Avenue SE, Calgary, Alberta T2J0A1. SSVP is a registered charitable organization of lay persons, dedicated to helping the needy without regard to religion. Weekly delivering food hampers to those in need.
