Ken, beloved father of Linda McLaughlin and grandfather of Erin McLaughlin passed away on August 26, 2019.
Ken was born in the prairie town of Alsask, Saskatchewan and spent his childhood years growing up in nearby Flaxcombe. After high school, Ken went to work in the Canadian National Steamships shipyard in Prince Rupert. It was during this time Ken was briefly in Army Reserves. After his time at the shipyards, Ken trained as a telegrapher and became a Station Agent with the Canadian National Railway.
It was his career with the CNR that brought him to the mining town of Nordegg where he met the love of his life; Val. Ken and Val were married in 1949 and had their first and only child, Linda in 1950. Ken’s career saw him move to several locations across Alberta. After Nordegg they moved to Leyland, Therien and Edgerton, then settled in Whitecourt in 1967 where Ken retired in 1989 after having worked for Canadian National for 45 years. In 1999, Ken and Val moved to Calgary to be closer to their family.
Ken had a large number of hobbies and interests including square dancing, hunting, fishing, flying, camping, curling, bowling, playing horseshoes, wine making, woodworking, carpentry and even telegraphy using special equipment that allowed his telegraph equipment to work on standard phone lines.
Besides Linda and Erin, Ken is survived by his brother Bill Burgess, and several nieces and nephews. Ken was predeceased by his wife Valeria, parents Velma and Walter, sister Cora (Guy) Boisvert, sister Helen Burgess, sister-in-law Thora (Bill) Burgess, niece Donna (Clair) Evans, niece Joan (Mike) Conzemius, and son-in-law Jim McLaughlin.
Funeral services will be held at St. Cecilia Catholic Church (321 90 Avenue S.E., Calgary, AB) on Friday, September 6, 2019 at 11:00 a.m., with Reception to follow at the parish hall. A Graveside service will be held at the Eden Brook Cemetery (24223 Township Road, Calgary, AB). Condolences may be forwarded through www.McInnisandHolloway.com.
