BRYANT, Victor Manning

1934 – 2017

It is with sadness and love that we announce the passing of Vic Bryant on November 7, 2017.

Born in Harcourt, N.B., he was the son of John N. and Mae (Petley) Bryant. He was the last remaining sibling in a family of 12 children. Vic grew up in Moncton N.B. where he was active in sports and the YMCA. He graduated from Moncton High School and continued his education at Sir George Williams University (Concordia) in Montreal, where he received his BA. Later he received his MA (Sociology) at the University of Calgary. During his varied career he worked for the YMCA in Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto and Montreal and taught at the Faculty of Social Work at the U of C. He was a principal and Secretary-Treasurer of Evalucan Ltd. and also worked as an independent consultant for government and non-profit organizations.

Vic will be remembered for his integrity, sense of humour, and intellect. He never missed an opportunity to engage in a vigorous debate on topics such as government, politics and education. Vic was thoughtful and generous and loved opening his home to, and bestowing gifts upon, his family and many friends. It was obvious that his fond affection was felt in return as the past six months were filled with numerous visits, cards and calls from friends from across the country who spanned many decades during his life.

Vic is survived by his wife Beth; son Don, daughter-in-law Heather Marples; granddaughter Hayley; daughter-in-law Terrie Hudon; grandchildren Tessa and Sean; brother-in-law John Ermen; and his many nieces and nephews and their families. He was predeceased by his son Andy.

The family gratefully acknowledges the compassionate care provided to Vic, our family and friends by the staff of Rosedale Hospice. You are extraordinary people.

At Vic’s request there will be no public memorial service. A Gathering of Friends will be held at a later date. Vic will be laid to rest in Mount Royal Cemetery, Montreal in the spring of 2018. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to a charity of their choice in honour of their friendship with Vic.

In living memory of Victor Bryant, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, Telephone: 403-276-2296.

Condolence Messages

  1. Aunt Beth and family,
Uncle Vic’s presence will be greatly missed by all, I had the opportunity a few times to feed his sweet tooth as you know one of his favorites sweets was brown sugar and peanut butter fudge. We got together at your cottage to make a batch the summer of 2016, I was honored, as you know that was also my dad’s (Tom) favorite, those moments will be cherished for all time. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and family.
    God Bless
    Ernie and Lenora Bryant

  2. Janice Phillips :

Aunt Beth & Family. Sending our condolences to you all at this difficult time, we were so sorry to hear of Uncle Vic’s passing. I am so glad I had the privilege of spending some time with him in the summer of 2016 when you were home and we all attended Melissa’s wedding and Charlotte’s baptism, we had quite the chat at the reception after the baptism. We talked of all the places he had been in your travels and about Andy and Don’s careers, he was quite proud of the boys and their families. The senior Bryant’s are all gone now, just all us kids and grandkids to carry on the Bryant name. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and family. Janice, Lloyd and family.
