BROWNSEY, Philip

October 28, 1990 – Peterborough, Ontario
December 7, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with incredible sadness we announce the death of Philip Arthur Lewis Brownsey on Friday, December 7, 2018.

As a young man of 28 in the midst of Graduate Studies in the School of Public Policy at the University of Calgary after recently graduating with a BA in Policy Studies from Mount Royal University and with plans to create a family with the love of his life Kelsie Sprague, it has been especially hard for all of us to say goodbye. But what we will always carry with us is his beautiful smile, his gentle, unassuming manner, his kindness and love of family, his love for our Westie Hamish, and his passion for video games, economics, politics, and especially music.

Philip is survived by his parents, Keith and Kathryn Brownsey; his brother Duncan (Natasha); his sister Sophia; and his dog Hamish. He also leaves behind five aunts, Valerie, Donna, Patty, Linda, Ann, and Karen; four uncles, Ry, Grant, Bruce, and Paul; and seven cousins, Latasha, Matt, Elena, Laura, Zachary, Noah, and Sam; as well as numerous close friends. He was predeceased by his grandparents, Doug and Winnifred Brownsey and Vern and Audrey Lewis.

Funeral Services will be held at Ross Glen Hall at Mount Royal University, 4825 Mt Royal Gate S.W., Calgary, AB on Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at 2:00 p.m.

If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Philip’s name may be made directly to The Calgary Humane Society, 4455 – 110th Avenue S.E., Calgary, AB T2C 2T7, Telephone: (403)205-4455, www.calgaryhumane.ca or the Epilepsy Association of Calgary, 316, 4014 Macleod Trail South, Calgary, Alberta T2G 2R7 Telephone: (403) 230-2764, www.epilepsycalgary.com. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

We will all miss him terribly. The family would like to thank the incredible team of ICU-C at Foothills Hospital who showed not only extraordinary expertise but incredible compassion.
In living memory of Philip Brownsey, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE N.W. CALGARY, AB, T3G 2T3, Telephone: 403-241-0044.

Dear Kathryn, Keith, Sophie and Duncan,
If only my sorrow would lighten yours. If only.
I will always remember your precious son, Phil as my son Patrick’s first real friend after moving to Calgary. I am grateful for this great gift he gave to our family–it was not a small thing then or now. May you grieve Phil’s death together with strong love, and meet hope again in this life that is both wondrous and heartbreaking. I send you my love to use on that hard journey, for as long as you need.

Henry and I were very fond of Phil, myself having only a handful of interactions with him in the hallways of EA in Mount Royal, every time though they always left a smile on my face knowing people like him existed. Henry and Phil had several conversations in classes they had together, always having a great time doing so. We are so sorry for the loss, it is a true loss for the world, he will be missed terribly.

  14. Dear Dr. and Mrs. Brownsey, and to all of your close family and friends:

I was terribly saddened to hear of your loss; my heart is heavy at the thought of your grief. While I know that nothing that I feel can compare to the sense of loss that you must be experiencing, I speak for many in saying that we feel this loss with you. I’m honoured to have been able to call Phil my friend, one of the first friends that I made during my time in university. I had the truly good fortune to work on a number of group projects with him during our time in the POST program together; given the choice, I would never have worked with anyone else. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

I wish you all peace and comfort in the midst of this terrible heartbreak.

  19. Keith, Kathryn, Sophie, Duncan and the many others who loved Philip: my heart breaks with his loss and for the unimaginable sorrow you are feeling.

I had the pleasure of teaching Phil three times and while a few classroom moments stand out, the one that I am most delighted to recall is a presentation he did for our Professional Practice class in which he patiently explained bitcoin and block chain. Phil patiently answered questions from the class, all of whom had been fascinated with his captivating presentation. He was so darn excited about this subject and was so knowledgeable about something so complicated! I smile now as I recall the glee with which he spoke of this. Overall, I was touched by the empathy he showed toward others during some difficult conversations in this “feelings class.” He very clearly made a lasting impact upon his classmates and friends.

I am so very sorry that he is gone and for the pain your family is enduring.

  40. I am lucky to have known Phil through our times in the Policy Studies program, and being in the same graduating class. He is a great friend, and I will miss him. There are no words to describe the sadness and the loss Policy Studies feels with the passing of Phil. I remember Phil as not only an incredibly brilliant individual, but also humble in his accomplishments. Phil was liked by everyone in Policy Studies, and no one had anything bad ever to say about Phil. My last encounter with Phil was at East Gate at MRU over the summer, of course we talked about politics, but also post graduate life. I will miss Phil, and I am so grateful to have met him. To Mr. and Mrs. Brownsey, Sophia, and Duncan my condolences to you and your entire family. Rest in Peace my friend.

I realize my condolences are late but I wanted to let you know you are in my thoughts every day since I heard.
