BROWN, Janet Edith

September 23, 1952 – October 30, 2018

Janet Edith Brown, daughter of the late Allan and Irene Brown, of Calgary, died tragically in a vehicle accident on Tuesday, October 30, 2018 at the age of 66 years.

Janet was born in Calgary and attended school in Midnapore and Calgary before graduating from the Alberta College of Art. She worked at Mount Royal College before pursuing a career as a professional photographer. Janet was a force of nature, with seemingly unlimited energy and she cared deeply about her family, friends and neighbours. She was unbelievably creative, not just as a photographer, but with crafts of all sorts and her home and amazing garden reflected her personality. Frugal with herself, her generosity to others was legendary and she excelled at entertaining: St. Patrick’s days, Christmases, New Years, Thanksgivings, Birthdays, and Sunday Dinners were filled with delicious food and hospitality. Janet loved animals; dogs, and horses especially, and she was a proficient horsewoman, who excelled at barrel racing, polo, polocrosse, and gymkhanas. Her passing has left a huge hole in the lives of those who knew and loved her, including: Rick, Colton, Tyson and siblings Neil, Caroline and Keith and numerous extended family and friends.

A Memorial Service for Janet will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB) on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the funeral home. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion, Turner Valley Branch in Janet’s memory.

I will sorely miss my birthday-buddy. I was lucky to have enjoyed a recent and highly entertaining lunch at Janet’s and am grateful for that time with her. Janet was artistic, talented, outrageous, rambunctious and hard-working but most of all a truly kind and thoughtful person. I am fortunate to have two beautiful portraits by Janet to keep her forever in my memory.

  7. My heart is just breaking from the loss of this dynamic wonderful woman! A friend for many years as we shared the same same passion for animals, especially dogs. I replay our last phone conversation in my mind when she was in Montana and laugh at her humor and how she loved life and all the twists and turns it gave us. Janet is missed by so many friends in Montana. She will always be in my heart.

  10. Lord, I struggle to understand how or why you would let this happen to someone like Janet; your great plan for each of us is often a mystery & is not clear.
My sincere empathy and prayers go out to Janet’s family & friends, especially her two sons Tyson and Colton; you leave behind so many happy memories & a void that will never be filled.
Janet, I was privileged to have known you as a close friend; I got your humour, I saw the twinkle in your eye to get a reaction, I witnessed your creativity, your kindness, your generosity, your compassion & received your hospitality on numerous occasions. I also saw your sensitive side which you tried so hard to hide. We shared the same family values in life & both had a passion for art so it was no wonder that we became friends.
My Friday morning breakfast with out you will never be the same.
I do not want to say goodbye & so will pray that we shall meet again one day. In the meantime rest in peace my friend.

This was a retirement that had hardly begun, no time to take your place in the sun.
No time to have done all that you could have done,
but you were loved enough for a lifetime more.

No time to enjoy the world & it’s wealth,
No time to take life down from the shelf.
No time to properly look after yourself,
You had so much love for others to last a lifetime more.

Those who live longer endure sadness and tears,
But you will never suffer those sorrowing years,
No betrayal, no hatred, no anger, no fears,
Just love, only love in a lifetime that should have been more.

  14. Rick, Tyson and Colton. There are people that leave an impression on us, Janet was that person. I met her later in life and as our friendship grew, she made me part of your family. I have the highest respect for her as a fellow competitor and director at our gymkhana club. She played to win but she also helped other to be their best. More than once she dragged me into the arena only to watch as she moved into second place (sometimes) As a director, her intentions were always to foster the development of our young riders and the make it a place to be proud of. No denying that perhaps her loud nature and tell it like it is personality pushed some folks away. Those that took the time to know her, were drawn in by it, myself included. She had a heart of gold. Every visit and meal, Janet brought a homemade gift. Even squatterville had a custom sign made by Janet. She was truly a unique character who lived loud, honest and proud. Please finish the cabin in Montana, you know that would be what she wants. If help is needed, you know I’ll be there to watch and drink your beer.
I’ll miss you Janet, thanks for the good times and true friendship.

  17. I remember Janet as someone who took the gift of life and ran with it. She was, without arrogance, unapologetically herself, a rare quality. Her positive energy and unshakable enthusiasm carried her forward and took others along with her. Janet gave real meaning to the words: “Give ‘er”. The way she embraced life must surely be her legacy.

  20. I am so very sorry to hear about your loss. I met Janet through Polocrosse and attest to her energy colorful personality. Her fierce love of her family was something I always admired. The most stunning photograph I ever saw was one she did. The one of a mostly white winter scene with horses and kids dressed in white. Her talent was amazing.
I hope that your memories of her laugh and her love overpower your sorrow.
