BROWN, James Alfred

August 15, 1926 – Belle Plaine, Saskatchewan
March 10, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

We are saddened to announce the sudden passing of our father, Jim Brown, who passed away on Sunday, March 10, 2019 at the age of 92 years.

Born in Belle Plaine, SK, Jim was raised on the family farm during the Great Depression, which left him famously frugal. He discovered an interest in geology in high school when he worked a summer job for Imperial Oil, preferring the bloodless world of rocks over a career in medicine or veterinary science. He studied Geology at the University of Alberta, graduating in 1947 with a BSc. He continued working summers with Imperial Oil, mapping the stratigraphy exposed along the great rivers of northern Alberta. In his final year of university, a pretty, young Geology student named Evelyn Dennis sashayed into his lab and stole his heart. After graduating he enrolled for an MBA at Columbia University in New York and while there worked in investment banking. Jim and Evelyn married in November 1951 and made their home in Calgary. Jim was a consulting geologist and avid investor for the rest of his life. He specialized in the oil fields of Wainwright, Alberta, and later prospected in the Caribou and Purcell Mountains of British Columbia until closing down his office in August last year. Jim walked for an hour every day, inspiring his children with his healthy approach to living.

Jim is survived by his children, Jim (Jeannine), Kathy, Nancy, Howard (Dana) and Glenn; his five granddaughters, a grandson, and five great-granddaughters.

He was predeceased by his parents Jim and Edith Brown and by his beloved wife Evelyn.

We will miss his devotion to us every day and will treasure his memory forever. A private family memorial will be held at a later date. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Jim Brown, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

Condolence Messages

  1. Stefan Ioannou

As long time friend (and former student) of Glenn’s, I had the pleasure of meeting Jim and Evelyn at their home in Calgary during the late 1990s while doing field work in the Purcell Mountains. His love for geology and the resource industry was inspiring. A passion clearly passed onto Glenn.

  2. Our deepest thoughts and condolences to all of your families. Although I never had the honor of meeting your father , I met Howard a number of years ago and have a wonderful friendship with him and Dana. I believe that through interactions with Howard, and the respect he has with people we both worked with, I believe James had instilled a lot of his traits, etc. , that I’m sure the rest of his family have as well.
