BROWN, Colin Peter

June 18, 1978 – Halifax, Nova Scotia
February 7, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Colin Peter Brown of Calgary, AB, passed away on Thursday, February 7, 2019 at the age of 40 years.

Colin was born on June 18, 1978 in Halifax Nova Scotia, to Anne and William (Mickey) Coughran, a little brother for Allan. His early childhood was spent in Nova Scotia where he developed a deep love for the ocean. In 1984 he traded the ocean for the mountains when he moved to Alberta with his mother and brother to begin a new era with his father Malcolm. He attended Elbow Park Elementary, Rideau Park Junior High and Central Memorial High School. Following school, he took college courses until he found his calling. He completed a BA (Psychology and Addictions) at Union Institute; Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy, Loma Linda University and in 2012 obtained his registration status with the College of Alberta Psychologists

Professionally, Colin was an outstanding friend, a gifted psychologist respected by his colleagues. For sixteen years Colin worked at the Alberta Adolescent Recovery Centre, where he achieved the position of Clinical Director. He deeply impacted the lives of many young people and families. He transferred pain to hope and his gift of humour brought light and laughter amid tremendous darkness.

Colin was a highly respected member of the Health & Wellness team for the past five years at Suncor where he made significant impact in championing education & awareness within mental health and addictions. He was a dedicated professional with a genuine enthusiasm for helping people, exhibiting clinical excellence and leadership; and his warmth and sense of humour was valued by the team.

Colin truly had a one of a kind sense of humour. Colin was a great dancer and loved the spot light, serving as the Mascot for the Calgary Hitman and a fill-in for Harvey the Hound for the Calgary Flames. All who knew him will have an abundance of Colin memories that will instantly spark laughter even now. He had the innate ability to laugh at himself and keep us all entertained by his many escapades. He will bring light and laughter as we come to terms with our loss of him.

Colin’s time was filled with numerous hobbies and pursuits. He loved hockey, music, playing his guitar, surfing and snowboarding. Just this past six months he discovered new outdoor challenges as he added fishing, hunting and golf. He cherished his time and outings with his family and numerous friends. Colin was the best dad to his boys and he enjoyed teaching them to ride bikes, ski, skate and toboggan. Whenever he sat down on the couch, Parker and Bennett were all over him and he loved every minute. “Colin always brightened each room he entered and touched or rekindled the hearts of all those who were blessed to know him.”

Colin was a committed and loving husband, father, brother and son. Colin leaves behind his true love, his wife Kyla and his precious sons, Parker and Bennett. He will be sorely missed by his parents, Anne and Mal Brown; his brother and best friend, Allan (Ally); step-siblings, Karen (Mark), Chris, Leah (Wade); his nephew Brodie and several step nieces and nephews. He was a loving and devoted son-in-law, and is survived by Kyla’s parents, David and Nola Peterson; brothers, Brandon (Kristi), Matt (Madeline) and nieces Alice and Poppy. He will also be mourned by aunts, uncles, cousins and numerous friends.

We love you, miss you, and will forever cherish your presence in our lives and hearts.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB) on Monday, February 11, 2019 from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m.

Funeral Services will be held at Westside King’s Church (3939 69 St SW, Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, February 12, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in at the church. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In lieu of flowers, due to allergies, donations can be made to https://www.gofundme.com/support-the-browns.

In living memory of Colin Brown, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

    David, Nola, Kyla
Sending your family strength and healing. Your hearts have been broken and have left you walking around in a world that makes no sense.

David and Nola you showed grace and kindness to our family during the darkest time of out life. Doesn’t it seem ironic that tragedy has found so many of our First Assembly friends.

I pray that in time, with Gods help, and the circle of friendship your hearts will be able to heal from your deep loss.

Kyla you are too young to be a widow. Your little boy’s too young left fatherless. You open your eyes and Colin is gone. You close your eyes, your Colin is still gone. I weep for you.

    With sincere sympathy.
    Sharon

  12. I’m struggling to find the words. I’ve not seen or spoken to Colin for many years. I’ve seen his name in the media over the decades, always for positive things. I thought to myself how happy I am for him; that he found a path that he enjoyed and excelled at; that he continued to spread his experience, strength and hope to so many. As I read the obituary in the paper I could just see him with his children and extended family laughing and enjoying life. I always saw Colin as a considerate, fun loving person and I am sorry for his family’s loss as well as the loss for those whose lives he touched and who, like me, will think of the world as having lost one of its blessings.

  31. I was so shocked to hear of Colin’s passing. My brother Lloyd, Colin and I spent a lot of time in the late ‘90s driving around in his Volkswagen and later the Olds he bought off of my Grandad. I would run into him once every three or four years, it was just last year I met him and Bennett out running errands and we learned that we now lived just a few blocks away from each other, just like we did in high school.
Colin was so funny, sweet and kind.

To Colin’s parents & Al, and Colin’s wife & kids. My truly heartfelt condolences that this has happened to you. I haven’t seen Colin in over 10 years, yet he still represents an important part of my life. He was the only boy in my high school that I dated and I have only good memories of him from our time together as young adults. Here’s a photo from the school foyer, when he turned 18. From all the tributes written here, it is evident that Colin’s loving & entertaining personality was felt by all that had the privilege to know him. He will be missed.

Those crazy workouts we did together the gym and how we shared our pain after. Also when you told me, you didn’t know how to change a flat tire on your bike, and I made fun of you and said I would send you a YouTube video how to change a flat tire. 58. Colin will forever be remembered and celebrated in our hearts. His charming, humble demeanour and his sharp sense of humour are the first things that come to mind, but it is his wonderful heart and willingness to help others that has made an impact on SO many lives young and old. He will live on through all of us affected by him. He will be dearly missed.
While his passing is extremely difficult to come to grips with and feels utterly unfair, we have been so blessed to know him..and if the same creator is responsible for bringing him to us, that same creator must be embracing him now. It is with a very heavy heart that we say goodbye. The funeral service was beautiful. Kayla, though we don’t know each other well (we met once long ago on your deck smoking cigars with the brothers)..my heart goes out to you and if you ever need anything PLEASE don’t hesitate to ask. Al and family, we love you. Please know that as days pass and your grief becomes heavy..there is no timeline or rulebook. The only way out is through..but you are not alone.
