BRODEUR, Joan Edith

March 26, 1924 – Watford, England
July 15, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Joan Brodeur of Calgary, passed away on Sunday, July 15, 2018 at the age of 94 years.

Joan Edith Brodeur (nee Beavis) was born on March 26, 1924, in Watford England. The second of nine children to Alfred and Alice (Sweeting) Beavis, Joan was practical but adventurous. Generous to a fault, after 94 years of living and loving, Joan’s giant heart was spent.

During the Second World War, Joan served her country both as an interim butcher and helping in the local military hospital. It was there that she met Philip Brodeur, a Canadian Army Private, subsequently falling in love. In 1944, they married.

In 1945, after surviving the war, Joan gave birth to their son John, and when John was nine months old, boarded the Queen Mary at Southampton and set sail to Canada to immigrate, reunite with Philip, and begin a new chapter of her life. Settling in Ville Saint-Laurent, Quebec, Joan and Philip had two more children, Alan and Jo-Anne, after which Joan returned to the workforce at Fisher Scientific.

Selfless by nature, in 1993 Joan moved across the country to Alberta after her daughter was diagnosed with terminal lung disease. She helped care for her daughter and three of her grandchildren, shuttling to and from doctors’ appointments and soccer games. Ever the fan, Joan would often remain on the sidelines and cheer.

Joan had a passion for life, enjoying bowling, gardening, and knitting. She loved watching a good baseball game – especially the Montreal Expos. From time to time, Joan could be heard singing and humming, and always found time to tell her life stories. Stubborn as they come, Joan also had a fantastic sense of humour and rarely bit her tongue when she had something to say – she would tell you the truth, even if you didn’t like what you heard.

Joan lived a long, full life, and will be deeply missed. She is survived by her sisters, Joyce Neill, Queen McCafferty, Ruth Bowes, Shirley Combellack, Carol Tapping, and Diane Burnell, of England; Sons, John (Jennifer) Brodeur and Alan (Jocelyn) Brodeur of Ontario; Son-in-law Trevor Young; grandchildren, Paul (Shelley) of Kelowna, Elizabeth (Martin), Christopher (Meagan), and Scott (Heather) of Ontario, and Tracy (Shaun), Patrick and Erin of Calgary; as well as twelve great-grandchildren, Jacob, Sarah, Emma, Duncan, Ronan, Caleb, Adalynn, Scarlet, Sloane, Maxwell, Emmanuelle and Theodore.

Joan was preceded in death by her beloved husband Philip, her parents Alfred and Alice, her brother William, her sister Barbara, and her daughter Jo-Anne.

Friends and family are invited to a celebration of Joan’s life from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 26, 2018, at the Haysboro Community Hall, 1204 89 Avenue SW, Calgary. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
