BRAY, Reginald (Reg) Walker

September 4, 1952 – Brandon, Manitoba
May 20, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Reginald (Reg) Walker Bray passed away on May 20, 2018. Reg battled a number of health conditions courageously until passing comfortably amidst members of his family.

Among his many achievements and successes, Reg was most proud of his family: parents Shirley and Mert; wife Judy; sister Sandy; sons Joel and Kelly; and, grandchildren Willa and Jude. Reg was unwaveringly committed to his family and will be deeply and uniquely missed by each of them. Reg was predeceased by his wife Judy, and father Mert, and will be at peace now that they have been reunited.

A man of many talents, Reg excelled at golf and curling, in addition to being proficient at most anything he tried. In recent years, Reg was able to spend considerable time on the golf course by wintering with good friends in Yuma, Arizona and then challenging his sons in Calgary during the summer. Reg also volunteered at a number of City of Calgary golf courses in order to spend more time in the golf setting he loved so much. When he wasn’t on the golf course, Reg could be found tending his own meticulous garden greens in both Calgary and Yuma. Reg’s ability to enjoy golf and retirement was built upon his strong work ethic and successful career as a manager with Allstate Insurance.

Reg will be remembered as a family man and all-encompassing gentleman: a firm handshake, but also a big hug; doling out tough life advice, but also providing a shoulder to cry on; a thoughtful speaker, but also an uninhibited storyteller and joker. Reg’s honour will live on through all the lives he has touched.

In keeping with his gentlemanly nature, Reg was very appreciative of the support and care he received from all staff members of Alberta Health Services. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to Calgary Health Trust – South Health Campus, Suite 800, 11012 Macleod Trail S.E., Calgary, AB T2J 6A5, Telephone: (403)943-0615, www.thetrust.ca

In living memory of Reg Bray, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB, T2X 3J3, Telephone: 403-256-9575.

  4. I first met Reg when he moved into Brandon from Alexander. We became instant friends shared a passion for curling and golf and spent many an hour at the club. Later on we became neighbors at the Old Campground at Clear Lake and many a wonderful time was had there. I always had a deep respect for Reg as he was so wonderful to my mother. In fact one time when she was curling all bundled up he coined the nickname “Teddy Bear” and she affectionately known as Teddy from that time on. He had a great sense of humour and I can see that smile on his face and you knew something was up. My condolences to the family and Shirley you raised a wonderful man.

  21. Karen Grube :

Dear Shirley, Sandy, Joel, Kelly and families, I was SO very, very saddened to hear of Reg’s passing! He was just such a wonderfully great guy! He was thoughtful, funny, talented, (very good looking!), a super friend to many and just so much fun to be around! I really enjoyed spending time with him as he always made you feel welcome and valued! I loved his sense of humor and his infectious, impish giggle when he’d played a joke or a trick on someone (which he often did and got a big kick out of!) I will always cherish the memories I have from Clear Lake in our younger days, spending time in the cook shack with him and Judy, lazing on floatables on the water all day, hikes through the woods and lots of partying! Unforgettable is the camping trip that Reg, Debbie Nye and I took together up to Edmonton to see Bill Dart! I still laugh every time I think of Reg calling me the following morning after I’d had a party at my parents’ house and posing as an RCMP Officer saying I needed to come down to the Office right away as there’d been a complaint about the party! He really had me going! Knowing how lonely I was my first year of teaching in Pierson, Mb, he and Judy came and stayed with me one weekend to keep me company! And when I moved to Edmonton, I was so thankful he and Judy were there too! It felt like I had family and we spent many great times together there! When my own Dad passed away, Reg gave me the greatest hug that made me feel so much better! Reg was such a wonderful husband and family man as you all know! It was so evident how much he loved you all and his beautiful wife, Judy! Reg was such a proud Dad when you boys were born!
He was the type of person, that if you hadn’t talked to him in awhile and then got together with him, it was as if you’d never been apart! Time spent with him was precious and was a highlight in my life!
I will truly miss him being in this world – he made it a happier place for me! Much Love to you all, I know what a great loss this is, but also what a wonderful gift God gave us all when he put Reg into all of our lives! Love from (as Reg called me, Grubbsie) Karen Grube xoxoxoxo

  26. I just found out today the passing the best boss, father friend a person could have. As Reg and I were about the same age it was easy for us to get along. He never treated you as an employee. I remember sitting in his office and just talking about our boys. Our boys played soccer against each other when they were younger. While at Allstate Reg would stand behind his staff. He would go to bat for everyone one of his staff. He fought for the Alberta region tooth and nail. Golf was a passion with Reg, I loved playing with him. He could hit that ball so far for man that was not huge in size. Reg was fun at work and play. Great sense of humor. Once Reg retired we lost touch until I found out Reg and a place in Yuma, AZ. I had a home in Maricopa, AZ and so I would make trips to Yuma to play a round of golf with him. He never changed, he was a man that I greatly respected and enjoyed every minute I spent with him. Joel, Kelly please accept my condolences. Your father was a special man, he will be missed dearly. Rest in peace my dear friend.
