BRAUN, Johanna

October 6, 1927 – Rosenthal, Ukraine
July 25, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Johanna went home to be with her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at the age of 90 years.

Johanna often said she did not need to travel abroad in her later years since she saw so much of the world in her youth. After meeting the love of her life, John, in South America they immigrated to Canada in 1957 to establish a home for their young family. Johanna was a devoted mother and Oma, always providing an open door and wonderful cooking. Her kindness, wisdom, generosity, and love were something that touched all those who knew her. Faith and family were of utmost importance to her and she will live on in our memories.

Johanna is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Herta and Jake Harms; her four children, Heidi (Stephen) Gibson, Rudy (Lottie) Braun, Gary (Allison) Braun, and Rick (Jennifer) Braun; and ten grandchildren, Rebecca (Jon) Mayhew, Kaylee Gibson, Tyler (Emily) Braun, Stefan Braun, Krista Braun, Kyle (Carrie) Braun, Jeremy Braun (Roxanne Howard), Samuel Braun, Lucas Braun, and Matthew Braun; and four great-granddaughters, Ainsley Mayhew, Robin Braun, Sophie Braun, and Berkley Braun; and many other extended family.

Johanna was predeceased by her parents Johann and Katharina Giesbrecht; her husband, John Braun; her son, Harold Braun; and four sisters, Katharina (Abram) Thiessen, Maria (John) Buhr, Anna Giesbrecht, and Helene (Peter) Niebuhr.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle N.W., Calgary, AB) on Thursday, August 2, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Graveside Service will precede at Queen’s Park Cemetery (3219 4 Street N.W., Calgary, AB) on Friday, August 3, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at Calgary First Mennonite Church (2600 Richmond Road S.W., Calgary, AB), on Friday, August 3, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the church. Dear Heidi and Stephen,
I just got off of the phone with my dad who was quite upset upon hearing about the passing of your lovely mother. He had not seen her last Tuesday, nor Thursday at Brentwood, but my mum was not able to give him any information because of her poor memory. Regardless, dad was reading the newspaper today and saw her obituary. As I mentioned he is taking this quite hard as he always enjoyed visiting with her, and with you at Brentwood. Also, I am very sad that David and I will not be able to see her again next month when we’re in town. Johanna was so polite, and pretty and spunky as she moved around in her wheelchair saying hello to everyone. And of course, saying her signature line, “Thank you so much,” and really meaning it. Whenever I hear someone say that, I think of her fondly !
    xo
    April, David, and Peter.

For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.

    Dear Family.
I wish I could be there with you to say goodbye to Mom and celebrate her life. I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to visit her when I was in Calgary last May. She was so happy and filled with peace about her relationship with God. I will miss her so much. My family here sends their love and condolences. I pray that Jesus will be near to all of you and comfort you with the knowledge that Mom is with Him and experiencing the joy of Heaven until we see her again.

For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 1 Thessalonians 4:14
    With Love,
    Darcy
