BOWDITCH, Sylvia

March 17, 1927 – Leader, Saskatchewan
April 27, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Sadly, we have to say goodbye to our sweet mother, grandmother, G.G., friend, and neighbor, who passed away peacefully at AgeCare Glenmore in Calgary, AB, on Friday, April 27, 2018. Sylvia celebrated her 91st birthday with family on March 17, 2018. She had been struggling with health issues for several years and had a stroke near the end of December, 2017, that she was unable to recover from.

Sylvia always had a smile for everyone, and found endless joy spending time with those that she surrounded herself with. She loved cooking and baking, sewing and creating dolls, pot holders, wall hangings and quilts for friends and family. She made sure her kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids each had their own homemade quilts, designed and created through her great imagination and talent. Sylvia was the Family Historian and gathered pictures of many generations and recorded history in her scrapbooks. Her daily joy was walking her little dog, Megan, around her neighborhood, and visiting with friends along the way.

Sylvia was born on the farm in Leader, SK, and was the youngest child. She had three older brothers that loved to tease her. Her parents, Anna and Sam Palynchuk, both came to Canada from the Ukraine in 1907 and 1910. When they married in 1918, they settled in the Leader area.

Sylvia was a telephone switchboard operator in Leader, SK, before she met Victor Bowditch, who she married in August, 1949. They were married for 61 years. They moved to Windsor Park in Calgary, AB, after they got married, and lived in a little house that they spent many years upgrading. When they first came to Calgary they had no plumbing and had an outhouse in the backyard. They welcomed two children, Doreen and Ken – one of which was spoiled by his mother!

Sylvia and Vic enjoyed camping in their trailer, and spent many weekends water skiing with friends at Little Bow Provincial Park by Champion, AB. Their travels took them from BC to Ontario to Mount Rushmore, South Dakota.

Sylvia leaves behind her daughter, Doreen Scott of Calgary, AB; son, Ken Bowditch of Calgary, AB; grandchildren, Todd Scott (Lisa) of Wyndell, BC, Dean Scott of Calgary, AB, Chad Scott of Calgary, AB, Ashley Berard (Bryan) of Airdrie, AB, Heather Tolley (Cam) of Carstairs, AB; and great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Scott, Kyran and Hayden Berard, and Grayson and Ellory Tolley.

Sylvia was pre-deceased by her mother and father; her brothers, Peter, Paul, and Nestor, and son-in-law; Barry Scott.

Sylvia will be cremated and requested that there be no funeral service.

If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to The Alzheimer Society of Calgary, 800, 7015 Macleod Trail S.W., Calgary, AB T2H 2K6, Telephone: (403)290-0110, www.alzheimercalgary.com or to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta, 200, 119 – 14th Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6 Telephone: (403) 264-5549, www.heartandstroke.ca or to S.T.A.R.S. In living memory of Sylvia Bowditch, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.
