BOUTIN, Michael “Mike” Frederick

August 14, 1960 – Niagara Falls, Ontario
February 25, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Michael passed away peacefully at Southwood Hospice on February 25, 2019 at the age of 58 years.

He is survived by his loving wife, Jennifer Drummond, and by his two sons, Lucas and Adam, the lights of his life. He is also survived by two sisters, Alleson Mandziuk of Osoyoos, B.C., and Paula Boutin-Roth, (Anthony Roth) of Calgary AB.

Mike had a large and loving extended family including father-in-law Doug Drummond (Roberta Martin) Lillooet, BC and brothers- and sisters-in-law: Mark Drummond (Marcia Barnes) of Dundas, ON; Mary Marte (Reg Marte) of Kelowna, BC; Megan Williams (Gordon Williams) of Kelowna, BC; Alison Drummond of Summerland, B.C; Liz Morgan of Coldstream BC; Matthew Drummond (Sonja Drummond) of Monte Creek, BC; Jamie Drummond (Laurie Drummond) of Kamloops, BC, and twenty-five nieces and nephews, and dear friends.

Mike was predeceased by his mother, Nancy Boutin, his father, Paul Boutin, and by his sister, Louise Eberwein (Parker Eberwein), of North Dakota.

Mike was a hands-on Dad, volunteering with Scouts Canada for many years as a leader. Mike also canvassed for the Heart and Stroke Foundation and participated in many fund-raising activities.

Mike earned a degree in cultural anthropology at McMaster University and a B.Ed from the University of Calgary. He taught at Centennial High School and at Crescent Heights High School in Calgary, specializing in photography, computer science, animation, and social studies. Coaching high-school boys soccer brought him much joy, as did Computer Club.

Mike was an avid photographer, skier with AST1 certification, mountain biker, wine connoisseur, and foodie. He shared his great passion for the outdoors and photography with his boys. He had an artistic eye, especially behind the lens, and painting in watercolors. Some of his best times were spent playing guitar with his large circle of friends.

Mike mentored his sons and hundreds of students, and was a good and generous friend to so many.

Determination and fortitude were a part of Mike’s personality and aided him with coping with a difficult cancer diagnosis. He lived with courage and grace.

Mike will be greatly missed by his family, friends, fellow teachers, and students.

We are deeply grateful for OUR VILLAGE of helping hands and kind hearts. Thanks also to the dedicated palliative home care team and Southwood Hospice caregivers for their specialized care.

Our dog Kona was a constant companion to Mike and to all on this journey and we are thankful for his boundless energy and joy.

Please join us for a Celebration of Mike’s Life that will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB) on Friday, May 3, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. 3. Mike was one of my first gymnastics coaches, and was like one of many older brothers I felt like I had in the gym. Going on to train and compete with him on the MAC team in my first year are among many memories I cherish. Studying stats together on a Saturday afternoon, getting ready for exams, recommending a good book … many random memories that flood my mind, and of course, the camaraderie around a ski weekend campfire. My deepest sympathies.

It was a pleasure to work with Mike, not because he was easy going and never created ripples at school; rather because Mike jumped in to all he did with such gusto that every interaction was richer because of him. Thank you for sharing him with us at Centennial.

Michael Boutin was an inspirational teacher and a good man at heart. He taught me a lot throughout the course of high school, and I think he made a positive impact on a lot of people who attended his classes. His sense of humor was wonderful, as was his sense of life, truly. My condolences go out to his family and relatives.
