BOUTILIER, Joan Allyson

August 18, 1958 – Maple Creek, Saskatchewan
December 28, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Joan “Joanie” Boutilier, beloved wife, love of his life, and best friend of Douglas Boutilier of Calgary, passed away on Friday, December 28, 2018 at the age of 60 years.

Joan lived her life with a wide-open heart and an unwavering sense of gratitude. She was authentic, compassionate, funny, sassy but always kind, and profoundly wise. She practiced love in a way that was unconditional. If you were loved by Joanie, you were loved fiercely and wholly.

Joan was passionate about her family and was deeply devoted to her husband, daughters, and grandchildren. She was married to the love of her life, Douglas, for over 35 years, and considered her daughters, Amanda and Chelsea, to be her life’s greatest achievement. Joan was a doting and proud grandmother to Titan and Scout. She was also a cherished sister, aunt, and daughter.

Joan was a loyal and thoughtful friend, and truly cared about her communities. Joan was a mother to many, guiding and caring for her pseudo-daughters’ hearts like her own. Joan was there when you needed her, whether that was for loving encouragement, a warm hug, or a reality check.

Joan had a generous heart and a passion for giving back through carefully constructed care packages, a well-cooked meal, and a thoughtful ear. She loved to share her Christmas baking and could be found dropping off platters for friends, work, her doctor’s office, and community organizations.

Joan was also a remarkably talented stylist with a true passion for her work. Her career spanned over 36 years, with 17 of them spent owning her salon, Absolute Hair. Joan gave much of her life to her clients, and her clients absolutely adored her.

Joan loved caramel coffee, walking her dog, cooking for her family, journaling, moments of inspiration, Chanel no. 5, a good Winners find, and watching Ellen. She loved to laugh, and she lived to love.

Joan had a soft heart and strong spirit. She was tender and tough at the same time–a feat not easily accomplished. She had a strong relationship with God and an enduring faith in the good. Even in her most challenging days, she remained gracious, tenacious, and faithful. In her heart, Joan knew that she was going home to God and to be with her first love, her mother Lilly.

Joan is survived by her loving husband, Douglas; daughters, Amanda Boutilier (Curtis Sander) of Cochrane, AB, Chelsea Boutilier (Katie Mraz) of Calgary, AB; grandson Titan Marcus Sander; granddaughter Scout Allyson Sander; brothers Dennis, Jim, and Gerry (Darla) of Calgary; sister Anita (Len) of Calgary; sister-in-law Heather of Calgary, sister-in-law Debbie of Bragg Creek, brother-in-law David of Calgary; brother-in-law Dan (Rose) of Dewinton; sister-in-law Ellen of Calgary; and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a number of close friends and chosen family, including her dearest friend Sheena, and her treasured girls, Laura, Chany, and Brandi. Last, but certainly not least, Joan is survived by her adoring dog Patience, who stayed by her side throughout her entire journey–a true companion and superstar.

Joan was predeceased by her parents, her beloved mother Lillian and father William Steele, her brothers, Douglas Klein and Dwight Klein, and her nephew Markus Coutu.

The Boutilier family offers a very special thank you to Dr. Cynthia Card and the Oncology Department of the Foothills Medical Centre, the kind and compassionate team at Southwood Hospice, and to Dr. Brad Davies, the most wonderful Family Physician one could hope for. The unwavering love and support from Joan’s family and friends, all of whom helped Joan and our family through this most difficult time, is deeply appreciated. From the bottom of our hearts we thank: Anita and Leonard Coutu, Gerry and Darla Steele, Dennis Klein, Jim Lynch, Karra Donnelly, Curtis Sander, Katie Mraz, Michelle Kuypers, Sheena Bean, Chantel Groening, Laura Meeker, Brandi Andric and a number of others. As Joanie would say, “We love you to the moon and back.”

A Celebration of Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB) on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at 2:00p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Southwood Hospice at 211 Heritage Drive SE, Calgary, Alberta T2H 1M9.

In living memory of Joan Boutilier, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB, T2X 3J3, Telephone: 403-256-9575.
