BOON, Gary Stuart

May 18, 1945 – Halifax, Nova Scotia
January 11, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Gary Boon, beloved husband of Betty Boon (nee Whitnack) of Calgary, passed away gracefully on Friday, January 11, 2019 at the age of 73 years.

He graduated with a P.Eng. from the University of Alberta in 1967 and an MBA in 1981. He worked in the oil industry from 1967 until 1991 when he started Mobility Plus Ltd., specializing in renovations for disabled people so they could stay in their homes. He made friends wherever he went and connected with people so easily. His sense of humour, patience, and quick wit will always be cherished. He will be dearly missed and forever remembered.

Besides his loving wife of forty-eight years, Betty, he was also a devoted father to his two children, Michael (Sara) Boon and David (Abbey) Boon and to three very special granddaughters: Emma, Ashley and Marley Boon. He is survived by sister Sheila (Art) Siewert; brothers Ron (Pam) and Ken (Cheryl); brothers-in-law Alan (Joyce) and Richard (Cheryl); eight nieces and nephews; and his two best friends Henk (Cidnee) Wind and Winston (Grace) Blenman.

A Memorial Service will be held at Bonavista Baptist Church (1507 Acadia Drive S.E., Calgary, AB) on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the church. 5. I was so sorry to hear about Gary. You and the boys (I guess they must be men now) will miss him very much. I think of the Smith Family reunion, and I remember when your family visited us in Kingston, must be close to 30 years ago. I will be thinking of you in the coming days and months.

  7. Roger W Noble :

    Betty, Michael, and David.
I was shocked and saddened to recently hear of Gary’s passing.
    He was too young.
Little did I suspect when I saw you guys at Uncle Norm’s birthday last year that this would be my last time seeing Gary. I’m glad that he took the time to talk to me and we reminisced a little about me showing up on your doorstep 49 years ago.
Gary was always nice to me and always, always interesting to talk to.
My sincere condolences to you and your family on this tragic loss.
    Love,
    Cousin Roger

  11. Dear Betty,
My deepest sympathies to you and your family.
Our team has been working on a new and difficult project for last few years and Gary was one of our earliest and most optimistic supporters. He was the best type of mentor we could hope for: informed, thoughtful, a master of his profession, and unwavering in his commitment to the interests of people with disabilities. He was also uncommon in his ability to express criticisms and suggestions in the kindest possible way. He was a true gentleman-engineer and we will miss him.

  12. Dear Betty and family,
We have had the great pleasure, both personally and as a company to know Gary for the better part of 20 years. When we worked on projects together he always had a smile, a sense of humor and focus to do the best for his clients and us, his sub-trades. Always a gentleman and a man of character. Gary and I had long talks over the years about many things, sometimes the conversation was about work and future projects or retirement or about boat building, but when his grand-kids came into the world he had a new focus and loved to be a grandpa. We will miss his thoughtful conversations, endless curiosity and his friendship.
    With deepest sympathies and condolences,
    Sam Frame

  13. William Taylor :

    Betty,
So terribly saddened this morning to learn of Gary’s passing and your deep loss. I ran into Gary at Rona a couple of years ago after not having seen him for many years and his gentle good humor and kind soul were as evident as they were when I worked with him (actually for him) 25 years earlier. I asked about you and the boys and his love for his family shone through his smiling face as it always did. Please take comfort in your loving memories of your fine husband. I am sorry that Sheila and I will be unable to attend the funeral as we are many miles away, but please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. Best regards, Bill & Sheila Taylor
