January 27, 1927– Cranbrook, British Columbia
December 21, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Fanny Bolland of Calgary, passed away on Friday, December 21, 2018 at the age of 91 years.

Fanny, the youngest of three sisters born to John Milton and Alice Mclean, grew up in Revelstoke, B.C., where she swam in the summers and skied in the winters. She left home after high school, moved to Calgary and found employment at the Bay downtown. She attended secretarial school at nights, and then got a job with Ashdowns on 11th Avenue, where she met her lifelong friend Fran. In the winter they would go public skating at Crystal Skating Rink on 4th Avenue, where one day a young sailor vying to get her attention tripped her. He got it.

Her future mother-in-law had a boarding house in Victoria Park, and having very little money at the time, Fanny would pay by the meal to join them for home cooking at the house. When initially being introduced, her in-laws heard Frankie, not Fanny; she never corrected them and that became her Calgary name, used by everyone here.

After marrying, their first house was in the town of Bowness, with no running water and no furnace. Two children later and the family moved to the new community of Haysboro in 1958. Surrounded by neighbours that became best friends, they thrived for the next forty-seven years. During those lean years, Fanny sewed almost all her own clothing, and to the horror of her sons some of their clothes too. She became an extraordinary seamstress and remained one her entire life.

When they retired, it once again became skiing in the winter and now golf in the summer. Possessing a frightful competitive streak, mom excelled at most any pursuit she took up, typically beating dad. A game of crib at night, the loser did the dishes; dad did a lot of dishes.

In 2005 they moved to Evergreen where more good friends were made, and they both thrived until George’s passing in 2014.

Moving into United Living allowed Fanny to build new friendships again. She loved having her meals with them and the conversations that would flow. The evening crib games were the icing on the cake. She was very happy there. Into her ninety-second year, her mind remained sharp as ever. She was still driving herself for groceries and other errands.

Fanny is survived by her sons, Lee (Margaret) and Mark (Cheryl); grandchildren Jenna (Ken), Jesse, Scott (Jessica), and Trevor; great-granddaughter Charlie, sister Irene, sister-in-law Adeline, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband George in 2014, and her older sister Betty in 1958.

Many thanks to the entire staff at United living for their exceptional care.

As Per Fanny’s request there will be no service.
