BOHME, Victor (Vic) Edward

August 27, 1925 – Mannville, Alberta
March 13, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Victor Edward Bohme, of Calgary in the presence of his family on Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at the age of 93 years.

Victor exemplified the Greatest Generation. He was born in Mannville, AB and spent his formative years in Vermilion. As a child of the Depression he took on an eclectic assortment of odd jobs that contributed to the family and instilled in him the tenacity, self-reliance and a sense of adventure that served him well in later life. During that era he also managed to fashion skis from barrel staves and while braving the banks of the Vermilion River, developed a love for downhill skiing that prevailed into his early eighties. Victor volunteered for the Royal Canadian Navy during the late years of WWII and eventually deployed on a minesweeper that in the immediate post-war helped clear the English Channel. Upon release from the Navy, Victor returned to Edmonton where he resumed his education and ultimately graduated as part of the University of Alberta’s first class of petroleum engineers. After completing his engineering degree, Victor gained employment with the provincial oil and gas regulator that eventually became the ERCB, the agency from which he retired as a board member, in 1987. After “retirement” he pursued a second career as an oil and gas regulatory consultant to nations just beginning to develop their hydrocarbon resources. In this role he and Joan were able to explore a host of exotic venues on virtually every continent. As a prairie boy with a navy background, the itch for the saltchuck had to be scratched and in 1992, he and Joan acquired a waterfront cottage and a boat, on the Sunshine Coast. At that location they spent many happy days with family and friends. It was at the cottage too, that Victor developed and fine-tuned his carving skills. After Joan’s passing, Victor’s interests shifted to focus on his immediate family, enjoying the company of family members and the opportunity to watch his grandchildren blossom to successful adults. Victor is survived by his children, Jane (Willie), Brian, Carol (Craig), Elaine (Phil), and Beth (Olav); his eight grandchildren, Rob, Andrea, Madeleine, Tristan, Julian, Lucas, Noah, and Maarten; his siblings and their spouses, Ron, Cal, Doris (Murray) and Betty (Bob); as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Vic was predeceased by his loving wife Joan in 2008.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated mid April, followed by a social gathering. An announcement with details to follow in April. Many thanks to his caregivers at Amica. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to your favorite charity in Victor’s name. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Victor Bohme, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  5. I worked with Vic at the ERCB for many years. My wife and I also knew Vic and Joan in Bolivia when we two couples were working and socializing there together.
There was much about Vic that I admired: a veteran, a very good engineer who was always learning, a very capable woodworker and a family man.
He was a good person to know.
