March 24, 1926 – Newton Robinson, Ontario
January 8, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Doris Birnie passed away on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at the age of 92 years.

Born in Ontario on March 24, 1926, Doris graduated from High School and began her teaching career in 1943, retiring in 1982. In 1956 Doris married Lloyd Birnie. They lived in Barrie, Ontario and raised two children, Fred and Helene.

After retiring, Lloyd and Doris sold their home in Barrie and moved to Calgary in 1987 where they enjoyed many years, always in touch with son Fred and daughter-in-law Marion.

Members of Baptist Union Churches since their marriage, Doris was baptized at First Baptist in 1956, where they worshipped until their move to Calgary. There, they became members of Bonavista Baptist Church. Doris and Lloyd’s lives always revolved around their church, and their move to Calgary and to Bonavista Church brought them so many Christian friends. After Lloyd’s passing, Doris lived at the Prince of Peace Manor where she made a special friend with Joe Hagel and played many happy hands of Kanasta.

Doris was an avid bird watcher most of her adult life. She always had a passion for sewing, knitting and crocheting. For several years she met monthly with a ladies group where they produced lots of warm winter clothing for the needy. Afghans became a source of great joy. Doris enjoyed many camping trips with Fred and Marion, and created a long lasting fond memory of seeing puffins in Newfoundland.

Doris is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Fred and Marion; step-grandson Craig; step-granddaughter Leah; and step-great-grandchildren, Mitchel and Ariss, Kallysta and Garrison. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Dorothy Coutts and Flo Brock.

Doris was predeceased by her husband Lloyd; daughter Helene; parents Maxwell and Daisy Coutts; sisters, Helene Brock, Bernice Patterson and Margaret Greaves; brothers, Walter and Bill; sister-in-law Evelyn Coutts; and brothers-in-law, Ike Brock, John Patterson and Ken Greaves. Losing her daughter was such a tragedy for Doris and Lloyd, and they thanked God for the peace that finally came.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB [1]) on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

Dear Fred and Marion;
Please accept my sympathy on the passing of your dear mother. I am the Organist at First Baptist Church, Barrie and I remember your Mom and Dad with such fond memories. After moving to Calgary, your mother always attended our church when she was visiting family members in the area. May you and your family know God’s comfort in a special way.

Mrs. Birnie was my kindergarten teacher at Maple Grove Public School in Barrie. We also went to the same church in Barrie. I remember many meals together as families in our home and in the Birnie’s home too. I have many fond memories of Mrs. Birnie. Sending prayers of peace and comfort to Fred and his family. Lovingly, Melanie Eberlin (Greaves)

Condolence from Mair (and Denny) Greaves on January 11th, 2019 5:46 AM

Some people come and go in our lives, but Doris was one who left an imprint so deep, it cannot be erased. She was an exceptional teacher, a wonderful role model to many children and parents, and a follower of Jesus no one could miss. I taught Mission Band with Doris in Barrie, and she and Lloyd were among our closest friends at First Baptist Church there. May God give you peace and joy in memories nothing can erase, Fred and Marion. He has welcomed Doris home.

Dear Fred & Marion, please accept our condolences in the passing of your mum, her light will be missed by those who knew her, & those she barely knew. She was a loving companion to our dad, & a positive, outgoing spirit to everyone she met. Fred & Marion: Sending condolences to you, on the passing of your mom Doris. Always hard to say goodbye, but I am sure Doris is thrilled to be in her new pain free world. She was always so positive on her outlook in life. Thank you, Doris, for being such a loving champion to my dad, Joe, in the last years of his life. You were always there to help him in his daily life, and were a great companion , along the way. Playing cards, watching curling on TV or whatever seemed like a fun thing to do together. Your support to Dad was always appreciated by all his children. I always enjoyed our visits when I would go to see Dad. May you rest in peace, Doris.
