BERNHARDT, Karl Paul Gottfried

December 7, 1928 – Erfurt, Germany
December 11, 2018 – Sundre, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, Opa and uncle, Karl Bernhardt on December 11, 2018 at the age of 90 years.

Karl was born in Erfurt, Germany to Emil and Helene Bernhardt and spent his childhood in Marbach, where his parents owned the local bakery. His youth was cut short by WWII when he was drafted at age 16. Promptly captured, he spent the following four years as a prisoner of war in France.

Karl returned home at the age of 20 and after completing his apprenticeships to Master Baker and Pastry Chef, met the love of his life Gertrud Fromm whom he married in July 1956. In 1960 Karl and Gertrud left East Germany with their daughter Petra following his brother Walter and wife Inge to Calgary. Here he worked for City Bakery and Dominion Stores as bakery manager until they opened their own bakery in Mayland Heights in 1963. Their son, Andreas was also born this year. In 1979 they sold the bakery and moved to Bergen where they farmed and raised cattle for the next 10 years. After retiring, Karl and Gertrud enjoyed travelling and yearly cruises as well as visiting their daughter and grandchildren, who were living in Germany.

Karl passed away peacefully at home with his beloved wife and daughter by his side.

He will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his wife Gertrud Bernhardt; his daughter Petra Hoeck; grandchildren, Sabrina (Adrian) Hoeck of Vancouver and Jari (Lisa) Hoeck of Munich, Germany; his brother Walter Bernhardt; his nieces and nephews, Christine (Lance) Greer, Angelika (Detlef) Schulz, Veronika (Juergen)Lilie, Norbert (Steffi) Paul, and Antje (Steffen) Fliegner. He was predeceased by his beloved son Andy in 1981, as well as his parents.
