January 18, 1935 – Robsart, Saskatchewan
August 18, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta
Guy (Papa) Berndtsson passed away on Sunday, August 18, 2019.
Born January 18, 1935 in the family farmhouse near Robsart, Guy was a Saskatchewan prairie boy from ‘south of the hills’ who became a ‘mountain man of note’. For the sheer challenge of seeing the other side of the mountain, what was down in the coulee, or to put wild meat or fish on the table, Guy would take his Volkswagen places others would not, pack and ride a horse, or as he preferred – walk many miles; he enjoyed the company of family and friends on many of these endeavors. Everyone was always welcome at Guy and Dianne’s table. Guy graduated from University of Alberta in 1959 as a Chemical Engineer and started his over fifty year career in the Alberta petroleum industry as a field engineer, and after a progression of management roles was ultimately appointed as a Board Member at the ERCB/EUB. In the last twenty years of his career, he consulted where he felt his mentorship and knowledge would help a worthy individual or project. Guy was always described as a man of integrity and true to his word. Guy excelled at many sports: track and field and hockey in his youth; competitive curling and fastball kept him healthy during his career; and he expedition canoed, cross-country skied and hiked well into his golden years. Scouter Guy/Mr. Berndtsson/Uncle Guy/Papa/Dad always had time for the youth of Our World – he took a genuine interest in their goals and always did what he could to support them. He liked nothing more than to hear about their achievements through both success and failure. The subtle advice he provided was always just what each needed at the time. Guy has gone home to the great hunting ground of Valhalla. The next time you enjoy a walk in the mountains, a drive through the prairies, a Tim Horton’s, or a sip of rum, think of him.
He is survived by Dianne, his wife of fifty-three years; son Norm (Jacquie); cherished grandsons, Erik and Peter; daughter Michelle; his brother Kurt (Wendy); and his brother-in-law Alex. Guy was predeceased by his parents, Bertil and Kari, and his sister Anne.
