BENNINK (Kowalchuk), Frances (Frankie)

September 18, 1949 – Glace Bay, Nova Scotia
May 9, 2019 – Calgary Alberta

Frances (Frankie)(Ma) Bennink (Kowalchuk), 69, of, Calgary, Alberta died peacefully with her family by her side on Thursday, May 9, 2019, at Rockyview General Hospital in Calgary.

Born September 18, 1949, Glace Bay, NS, Ma’s family was in the Royal Canadian Air Force. They moved around a lot growing up, from Chatham, NB, Debert, NS, Calgary, AB, Sioux Lookout, ON, Yorkton, SK, and finally back to Calgary. Frankie worked hard most of her life. She was instrumental in the ownership and operation of a successful plumbing company with her first husband Doug and then a successful electrical contracting company with her second husband Gary. She continued post-secondary education much of her life, taking many different courses in various subject matters. You could say she had thirst for learning and a lust for reading. It was rare not to find her wrapped up in any genre reading whenever she had idle time. Ma loved to laugh; she could turn a bad day into the best day ever. She was kind caring and generous. She could sit and tell stories for days and always found the good in people and made it shine through. She had a hard life, but she would never show it. She believed the past was gone and no sense worrying about it. She loved the sun and being outdoors, sitting beside the fire with friends and family. She will be dearly missed.

Frankie is survived by her two sons whom she loved very much, Chad and Dean (Jacquie) Kowalchuk of Calgary, AB; grandson Spencer, sisters, Lynda and Denise Gulliver; nieces, Karla, Cindy and Jacquie; and nephews, John, Rick, James, Michael and Robert. She was predeceased by her parents, Esther and Richard (Dick) Gulliver of Calgary, AB; her brother Billy, sister Trish, and her late husbands Doug Kowalchuk, of Gilbert Plains, MB, Gary Bennink of Rimbey, AB, and Dennis Handrahan, of Calgary, AB.

Nothing Ma loved more than a good party with her friends and family. Join us one last time in her memory. A Celebration of life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Eastside, 5388 Memorial Drive NE, Calgary, AB) on Friday, May 17, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the Ogden House Club (2102 69 Ave SE, CALGARY, AB).
