BENNING, Bernard Anthony

August 4, 1938 – Humboldt, Saskatchewan
April 1, 2018 – Limerick, Ireland

We are saddened to share that Bernard Benning, beloved husband of Maureen O’Connor, passed away suddenly on Easter Sunday, April 1, 2018 in County Clare, Ireland, at the age of 79 years.

Bernard was the first born of nine to Tony and Mary Benning. He left home at the tender age of 14 to attend boarding school at SPC, and then went to Teachers College in Saskatoon; his first teaching job was in Tisdale, SK. Bernard valued education and continued to pursue higher education in his adult life; achieving two mastered degrees and his CMA.

After moving to Calgary to further his studies, he was introduced through his landlady, to Maureen O’ Conner and was welcomed into the O’Connor Clan. Maureen and Bernard married on June 27, 1964; their union was blessed with three daughters. Family was of paramount importance, and meant everything to him. He always worked to connect with his many relatives and friends and his door was always open. Active in the church and community he volunteered with the Stampede, Rotary Club and Golf.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Maureen; his three daughters, Caroline, Shelagh and Lori, and their families; and by his brothers and sisters; and his in-laws.

Bernard had a strong belief that life and connection were worth the effort, and he timelessly worked to maintain and improve community and relationships. He will be greatly missed.

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Sunday, April 8, 2018 at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Pius X Catholic Church (2424 – 24th Avenue N.W., Calgary, AB) on Monday, April 9, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the church. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Condolence Messages

  1. Rene and Steve Edwards :

Maureen and family please accept our most sincere condolences on Bernie’s passing. We have many fond memories of our association with Bernie over the years. He was a great mentor and a wonderful boss during my time in the oil and gas industry and we maintained our connection in later years through his long association as a volunteer with the Calgary Stampede. Bernie’s approach to life mirrored his approach to his long and varied career. He always showed kindness and respect, offered constructive criticism when required and maintained a robust sense of humour and the ability to laugh. Bernie was respected by so many people and he will be greatly missed.

My deepest condolences on the loss of your dear husband, father and brother. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work with and count Bernie as a valued friend through Bow Valley College over a decade. A truer kind, wise gentleman who made his mark and was liked and admired by all who knew him. May your memories over time sustain you.
    Sincerely,
    Carol Ryder

Back in 1989-92 not many know of the significant contribution that Bernie made to the construction of what was then the Bi-Provincial Upgrader in Lloydminster Saskatchewan as the financial and administration guru. This billion dollar project still operates well under the aegis of Husky 25 years later. he made a significant impact on the fortunes of his home province. Rest in peace Bernie.

Dear Maureen and family; We were so saddened and surprised to learn of Bernie’s passing. Please accept our sincerest sympathies, I had not seen Bernie for several years, since we last had lunch and I was planing on calling soon to arrange another luncheon. You can imagine my surprise when I picked up the paper and learned the sad news. I so enjoyed working with Bernie at Canterra and Husky; we shared a lot of common thoughts over the years. He was one of the most pleasant people to deal with and always so honest and forth right. We have all lost a great guy.

  18. I two was surprised and saddened to learn of the passing of Bernie. I was doubly saddened that I was not able to attend his commemorative/funeral services. I’m sure you did him well even with the fact that an Ireland holiday turned into such an unhappy event. The last time I visited with Bernie was when both of us were in re-hab after heart events several months ago. Naturally we both thought at that time that we were done with heart issues.
I have many fond memories of Bernie mainly as an educator and a common sense man of integrity. Our seven children attended St. Mary’s school which Bernie, Arlene McGinn, Ralph Vigna and several other good leaders turned in to an excellent learning centre. I hold all of them with respect as I enjoy my seven children, their partners and our many grandchildren (22) and now our great grandchild. You will recall that our Debbie and your Caroline were hip-pocket buddies throughout their senior school years. Debbie asked me to forward her respect and condolence to all of you.
Do remember the good times. That is what Bernie would have you do.
    Regards,
    J.E. (Jim) O’Byrne
