BECKER, Katherine “Kay” Anne (nee MacKenzie)

August 12, 1937 – Taber, Alberta
February 20, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Katherine Anne Becker, beloved wife of the late George Becker of Calgary, AB, passed away on Wednesday, February 20, 2019 at the age of 81 years.

Kay was born August 12, 1937 in Taber, AB and spent most of her childhood years there. She was the fourth child of Ewen and Catherine MacKenzie. Her father was a sheep farmer in nearby Skiff, AB. Kay was very proud of her Scottish Heritage. She moved to Medicine Hat, AB to earn her Nursing Degree and she graduated in 1958. Her first job was in Empress, AB where she met her future husband, George. They married October 3, 1959 and their first daughter, Sandra, was born August 5, 1960. Their son, Gordon Michael, followed on January 31, 1963 and their second daughter Susan on November 11, 1964. Kay’s career was often put on hold as she followed George’s ever-changing career moves. She practiced her nursing whenever she had the opportunity, most memorably in Empress, Cochrane and Brooks. Kay was very active and was on the recreation board in Cochrane. Kay enjoyed curling and bowling, she tried her hand at being a seamstress and crafter with questionable success. She frequently babysat for the neighbours in Cochrane. Kay was the neighbourhood mom and growing up, her daughters often had many friends over. Kay was a good cook and continued having the girls’ friends over for Sunday dinners or special occasions. She was very active in her grandchildren’s lives after she moved to Calgary.

Kay is survived by her daughters, Sandra and Susan (Rick); granddaughter, Amy-Lynn; grandson, Daniel; and great-granddaughter, Tianna Katherine. She is also survived by her sister, Sandra (Barry).

She was predeceased by her loving husband, George; her son, Gordon Michael; parents, Ewen and Catherine; sister, Agnes; and brothers, Gordon, Alistair and Ewen.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB), on Tuesday, March 26, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.
