BECK, John Leo (Jack)

June 20, 1935 – May 14, 2016

John Leo Beck passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at the age of 80 years at the Rockyview General Hospital. John leaves behind the love of his life, his wife of 59 years, Lyla. He will be deeply missed by his daughter and son-in-law Sherry and Tom Cook; his son Dale Stephen Beck; and granddaughters Christine Cook and Stephanie Cook, all of Calgary.

Born and raised in Calgary, the eldest of four siblings; Lawrence (Thelma) Beck of Creston, BC, Barbara (Fred) Dyck of Calgary, and Robert (Judy) Beck of Fairmont Hot Springs, BC. He was a kind-hearted big brother and a devoted and thoughtful son to his parents. He will also be fondly remembered by his sister-in-law Donna (Doug) Latimer as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

John was a long-time employee of Canadian Western Natural Gas (now ATCO), taking great pride in his career. Known as a dedicated man of integrity, a job well done was always his mandate. At the time of his retirement in 1993, he held the position of Manager, Central Operations, accountable for natural gas distribution to Calgary’s downtown core. His expertise, approachability and aptitude for building amicable, cooperative relationships with The City of Calgary, earned him the endearing title of “Mr. Gas Company”. Throughout his career, John was a knowledgeable and trusted mentor to many.

John was a truly remarkable man, there was virtually nothing he could not build, repair or fix with amazing ingenuity. A talent he was more than willing and excited to share with friends and strangers alike. Always available to lend his impressive knowledge and generous with his time in helping out others in need.

Once retired, he became a proud member of the Gyro Club of Calgary – A Fraternity of Friendship, serving as President in 1997-98. The club’s motto “Poise, Power, Purpose” fit John perfectly. He spent many pleasurable hours in his beloved and abundantly equipped woodworking shop, crafting detailed pieces, proudly displayed in his and his children’s homes. He and Lyla also enjoyed many travels throughout the world, spending their winters in Arizona. He lived his life with optimism and enthusiasm for future endeavours. John will be remembered as an extremely genuine and compassionate man, his unconditional love and support for his family will always be held in cherished memories.

Condolence Messages

  1. Our condolences to John’s family. I personally agree with the wonderful words describing John in the write up! A man of true integrity, compassion and professionalism. When we initiated Alberta One Call in the fall of 1984, John was by our side in the office ensuring all went well. Our son had several great summers as a student working in John’s group. When I received a consulting contract with Consumer’s Gas many moons ago, John was the first person I thought of, and flew him to Toronto to assist for a week. You will be missed by many, John – Rest in Peace!!

If one was ask any member of the Calgary from the 90s who was the kindest Gyro , the name John Beck, would be top on the list. The only thing surpassed John’s kindness was his love for his family. He was a gift to all who knew him.
