BATINIC, Valentina

July 20, 1949 – Stendal, Germany
July 30, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Valentina Batinic, (nee Gudosnik) beloved wife of late Zvonimir Batinic of Calgary, Alberta, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2019 after a long and courageous battle with Multiple Myeloma, at the age of 70.

Valentina was born in Stendal, Germany, along with her twin brother Vladimir, where their mother Antonina, a nurse with the Russian Army, was stationed after WWII. When Valentina was a young child she moved with her family to Crimea where she grew up.

Valentina graduated from the University of Simferopol with a Degree in English Literature and Language Arts. In Crimea, she met her future husband Zvonimir and after getting married she moved back with him to his native Bosnia and Herzegovina where she worked as a high school English teacher for many years. It was there that she mastered the Croatian language and became an accomplished gardener, spending many hours tending her flowers, fruits, vegetables and herbs. In 1997, looking for a better life after the war in Bosnia, she and her family moved to Canada where she always felt welcome and appreciated.

Valentina enjoyed spending time with her family, reading, following world events, travelling and listening to opera and classical music. She found inspiration in reading the Bible and did so on a daily basis, quietly contemplating the life and promises of Christ.

She is survived by her sons Vladimir and Josip, daughters-in-law Mladenka Sofia and Nevena, brothers Vladimir and Viktor, grandchildren Noela, Neven and Nikodina.

Valentina was predeceased by her parents and her loving husband Zvonimir.

Funeral Services will be held in Catici, Bosnia and Herzegovina at a later date. Condolences may be forwarded through www.McInnisandHolloway.com.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Doctors Without Borders / Médecins Sans Frontières www.doctorswithoutborders.ca so they can provide life-saving medical humanitarian relief where it is needed most.

In living memory of Valentina Batinic, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Deerfoot South, 12281 – 40th STREET SE, Calgary, AB T2Z 4E6, Telephone: 403-203-0525.
