BARTON, Desmond Howard

May 1, 1926 – Big Valley, Alberta
January 13, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Desmond Barton, beloved husband of Drina-Mary (neé Francis), passed away peacefully in Calgary, AB on Sunday, January 13, 2019 at the age of 92 years.

Born in Big Valley Alberta, the only child of Mabel and Howard Barton, Des moved to Calgary with his parents when he was two. He grew up in Mount Royal and completed all his schooling in Calgary. After graduating from Western Canada High School in 1945, he attended the University of British Columbia. He subsequently completed advanced management programs at the Banff School of Advanced Management and Ivey Business School at Western University.

Des started with Gulf Research and Development in 1947 and stayed with the Gulf group of companies for the next thirty nine years. Working in the Land Department he developed his negotiating skills and rose to the positions of Vice President, Gulf Canada Properties Limited and Manager, Land, Gulf Canada Resources Limited. As a Certified Petroleum Landman, Des would have qualified this year for his sixty year pin in the Canadian Association of Petroleum Landmen. He was accomplished in his field and internationally respected for his ethical standards, having served as a member of the Ethics Committee of the American Association of Petroleum Landmen. He was granted an Honourary Life Membership in the AAPL in 1989 in recognition of this work.

Des met the love and light of his life, Drina, at Gulf. They wed in 1952 and celebrated their 66th anniversary last August. Des was a family man who devoted all his leisure time to his wife and children. In retirement, Des’s passion for travel blossomed and, always accompanied by Drina, he proceeded to see much of the world, over sixty countries on six continents.

Des enjoyed golfing and cross country skiing and had a strong interest in design and construction. He started by being stage electrician for Betty Mitchell’s high school productions at Western Canada High. He designed both of the houses he and Drina lived in, completing much of the work on the first home himself and would fix anything and everything in a professional manner.

As an active member of Christ Church, Elbow Park, Des was Envelope Secretary, Rector’s Warden, and latterly, Treasurer of the Endowment Trust Fund. He was a member of the Group Committee for the Boy Scouts of Canada and acted as Secretary of the Mayfair-Bel Aire Community Association. He was a member of the Glencoe Club, the Calgary Golf & Country Club, and the Calgary Petroleum Club. Des’s character was beyond reproach and he was always the perfect gentleman.

Des is survived by his wife, Drina-Mary; his children, Deborah Ambrose (Thomas) and Dwight; and his grandchildren, Hilary, Meghan, and Desmond. He was pre-deceased by his daughter-in-law, Maggie.

Funeral Services will be held at Anglican Parish of Christ Church (3602 – 8th Street S.W., Calgary, AB) on Monday, January 21, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christ Church Elbow Park or a charity of the donor’s choice.

In living memory of Desmond Barton, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  8. Drena and family

I am sure you are all very sad with the loss of husband, father and grandfather. A difficult time for you all.

I am sure it was a release for Des to be released from the ill health. This does not make it any easier for you all. Although I did not know him all your comments Drina indicated he was a kind caring man. He will leave a big void in your life. Your times together seemed to be filled with many fond memories. I hope these will help make the future a little less sad.

    My love to you all
