BARRETT, Ross Clayton

September 7, 1951 – Montreal, Quebec
June 30, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Ross passed away in his sleep, of natural unknown causes, on June 30, 2018. He had almost finished treatment for a highly curable cancer. Ross was 66 years old. His granddaughter, Nora, was born the night he died.

Ross graduated from Bishops University where he excelled as a varsity hockey player. He and Nancy moved from Montreal to Burlington and settled in Calgary twenty-five years ago.

He spent forty-one years with Hood Packaging. Ross’s business acumen was highly regarded in the North American packaging industry. He ended his career as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for the Paper Division. He loved his work, trips to Europe to view new packaging machinery and entertaining the customers. He enjoyed it all and especially his rapport with colleagues in the Mississippi office.

For twenty-five years Ross was a member at Canyon Meadows Golf Club. His golf buddies Dale, Don, Greg and both Waynes were always there for him. He was a fine golfer having caddied for his Dad from age eight and played from age twelve.

Ross was a master of work/home balance. He loved Miss Vickies potato chips, red wine and good scotch. He relaxed at his mountain condo, cheered on his sons at football, rugby and swim meets. He was very proud of his sons’ adult accomplishments – Keith (urologist in Kitchener) and Craig (Sales in Calgary’s Mahogany). His giggling granddaughters always had him laughing.

Left to mourn are his wife and best friend of forty-one years, Nancy (nee LaVigne); sons and daughter-in-law, Keith and Lindsey and Craig; granddaughters, Sophia Marie, Anna Grace and Nora Anne; stepmother Claudette (nee Boileau); sister and brother-in-law, Brenda and Amandio; brother and sister-in-law Ian and Joom. Ross was predeceased by his father Frank Barrett and mother Beryl Barrett (nee Watier).

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church (1600 Acadia Drive S.E., Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Celebration of life to follow at Canyon Meadows Golf Club (12501 14 St SW, Calgary, AB T2W 2Y8). Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If you wish, memorial contributions may be sent in memory of Ross to The Alberta Cancer Foundation (710-10123 99 Street NW, Edmonton AB T5J 3H1) with a designation toward head and neck cancer research.

Thank you to the Tom Baker Cancer Centre for their outstanding care.

In living memory of Ross Barrett, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB, T2X 3J3, Telephone: 403-256-9575.

Ross and I go way back with Bonar Packaging in Burlington Ontario. When Ross landed the Certainteed Account I was given the job of service manager of Certainteed and I eventually became the first person to directly report to Ross. Not only was he a great boss but we became and remained good friends.
I am so shocked and saddened to hear of Ross’s passing. He will be missed by all who knew him.

I knew Ross while working at Hood Packaging Corp. The first thing I liked about Ross is his name, as we both share it. There are very few people on this planet who share our namesake.

With that said, Ross was a very open, quick witted individual who had a sense a humor and made our National Sales Meetings more enjoyable.

He was always a positive and sharing guy who had a wealth of knowledge about our industry. He will be sorely missed.
