BARRETT, Barbara Mary

December 21, 1936 – London, England
June 21, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with profound sadness that the family announces the passing of Barbara Mary Sophia Barrett on June 21, 2018 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Barb began her journey on December 21, 1936 in London, England; born second daughter of four, to proud parents Stanley and Gladys Lucas. From fond stories we know Mom demonstrated her grit and determination from an early age which remained with her throughout her life. She met her future husband John, whilst competing in track and field; a passion they both shared and they later married on August 10, 1957. Their first child Teresa, was born on May 7, 1958. In 1966 the young family immigrated to Canada. After a few years in Montreal they headed west to Edmonton where they welcomed the birth of their second child Neil, on January 26, 1972. Settling permanently in Calgary their third child Greg, arrived on July 23, 1975 and completed the family.
In the early years Mom worked in a variety of fields and exceeded expectations in all, then chose to stay home and focus on her family. She was a really good Mom, proud Nana and Great-Nana. Barb had a sincere, fair, fun and generous spirit leaving each of her children with lessons learned as well as some hilarious moments to cherish with their friends and family’s. Her love of sports continued through-out her life and she volunteered with the Calgary Diving Club. Not being one to PVR events she would be awake early in the morning watching live tennis matches and was always up to date on current events at home and abroad.

Barb is survived by her daughter Terry Cairns (Don), her sons Neil Barrett (Eryn) and Greg Barrett (Celeste); her precious grand-children Lucas, Kate (Ben), Connor, Ava and Emerson and her great grand-children Ethan and Brooklyn. From across the pond – twin sisters Pam Hickman and Ann Lucas; her brother and sister-in-law Tom and Joan Barrett as well as her nieces and nephews Nicholas, Jocelyn, Natasha, Ben, Chris, Paul, Debbie and Martin, their spouses and many additional extended family members including Ev Cairns and family. Barb was pre-deceased by her parents Stanley and Gladys, her mother-in-law Ena, her elder sister Jose Innocent and niece Jacinta Innocent; her brother-in-law’s Hugh Innocent and Norman Hickman; Gord Cairns as well as her husband and child-hood sweetheart John, in September 2005.
She will be missed by all who knew her and kept in touch with friends and family in London, those originating in Montreal, Edmonton and Calgary; all of whom meant a lot to her.

Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. The family would like to give a special thank you to all the wonderful staff of the Gyne/Oncology ward at the Foothills Hospital – you were simply amazing! Florence being her roommate and friend during those many months made it bearable – thank you! Although the transition to unit 47 was difficult as her illness progressed, Mom also met and was cared for by some very kind and competent staff as with her short stay at Sarcee Hospice.

In living memory of Barbara Barrett, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE N.W. CALGARY, AB, T3G 2T3, Telephone: 403-241-0044.
